Job summary

Bolingbrook Park District is seeking a Full-Time Park Maintenance Specialist (Turf) to oversee day-to-day turf management and landscape maintenance. This role requires 90% outdoor work and a willingness to operate a variety of park maintenance equipment.

Applicants should have a high school diploma, at least two years of manual labor experience, and a valid driver’s license; CDL-C or license within 6–12 months is preferred, with IL pesticide license a plus.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the NR, Horticulture & Turf Manager, or designated supervisor, perform day-to-day management of turf and assist with maintenance of landscaping and trees. This position requires 90% field work in the out-of-doors.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Degree in related field preferred.
  • Have at least two years’ experience in a wide variety of manual labor activities.
  • Valid driver's license is required and the ability to drive a truck and trailer and have a CDL-C or obtain within 6-12 months of hire.
  • State of Illinois pesticide operator license or ability to obtain is preferred.
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs. for 25 yards
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • A reasonable mechanical aptitude and interest in machinery and equipment used in the maintenance of parks.
  • Skilled in the use of machinery for park maintenance, including zero turn lawn mowers, tractors, hedge trimmers, string trimmers, edger, etc.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precaution
  • Ability to tow a trailer with a truck and secure equipment on the trailer
  • Ability to use assorted hand tools such as, but not limited to, rakes, shovels, hand saws, pruners, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written directions
  • Ability to work in all types of weather
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties:
  • Mowing, edging, and trimming of parks, around facilities, and of trail sides.
  • Edging and mulching landscape beds and park trees.
  • Collect garbage in parks prior to mowing.
  • Repair turf damage in parks.
  • Drive equipment and or trailers to park or trail areas for mowing.
  • Safely operate equipment (mowers, string trimmers, brush cutters, chainsaws, skid steer, loading machine etc.) as assigned.
  • Assist with the grinding and cleanup of tree stumps.
  • Assist with the aeration, fertilization, seeding and herbicide applications to improve the health of the turf grass in parks.
  • Assist with the planting of trees, annual flowers, and perennial plants as needed.
  • Assist with the pruning and removal of trees following best management practices.
  • Assist with ecological restoration through brush/tree removal in naturalized areas.
  • Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment and report any need for repairs to your direct supervisor
  • Abide by the Bolingbrook Park District dress code for your area.
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Park District’s safety program
  • Work as a Team Player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments
Marginal Duties:
  • Maintain and repair gravel and asphalt trails and pathways as directed
  • Remove trash from natural areas and along trails
  • Remove snow from walks, drives, lots and trails
  • Assist with volunteer workdays
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Walking: to pick up trash; mow and/or trim grass
Standing: to watch over prescribed burns
Sitting: to drive or ride in a vehicle; or while mowing grass
Lifting: to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 25 yards while loading materials onto truck
Climbing: to climb ladder while trimming trees
Pulling/Pushing: to remove weeds; to rake leaves or fields; to open doors
Stooping: to access equipment, lift supplies, to pick up litter
Seeing: to drive a vehicle or lawn mower; to obtain information from written materials
Carrying: herbicide backpack

Will be required to use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
Will be exposed to all types of weather conditions.
Will be exposed to poison ivy and biting or stinging insects.
Will be exposed to smoke during prescribed burns.

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

Must have the ability to read and write in English and organize materials. Ability to drive a vehicle, construction equipment or powered lawn equipment. Must be able to relate to other people in a professional manner. Must exhibit good safety awareness and judgement. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions. May be exposed to fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and occasionally heat and smoke. Must wear PPT-personal protective equipment based on daily tasks.

HOURS

Generally, 6:30am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday, but hours may change due to workload, special events or weather. May be required to work weekends. If changes occur, you will be notified by the NR, Horticulture & Turf Manager. On call evenings and weekends for seasonal snow removal.
