Job summary

Plainfield Park District seeks a base level park maintenance worker to perform routine upkeep of parks, facilities, and equipment under supervision. You will operate mowers, tractors, skid steers, and a variety of tools to keep fields and grounds safe and inviting for families and visitors.

This is an unskilled to semi-skilled role with opportunities to learn equipment care, perform preventive maintenance, and support daily park operations.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Practical knowledge or ability to obtain knowledge about equipment and tools used in maintenance operations.
  • Ability and willingness to follow directions and work independently or as a team.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment including mowers, tractors, skid steers, and vehicles.
  • Use hand and power tools and small engines.
  • Inspect and report hazards and maintain facilities.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain athletic fields, pools, buildings and grounds.
  • Rake, haul, and remove debris; perform turf and landscape tasks.
  • Follow safety procedures and park district standards.

The starting pay rate is $20.00 per hour, DOQ

GENERAL PURPOSE:

This is a base level (unskilled/semi-skilled) classification in park maintenance and operations. This individual performs all preventative and routine park and equipment maintenance, under general supervision, through wide variety of tasks that may be assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate various equipment; including but not limited to mowers, tractors, skid steers, and vehicles.
  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools and small engine equipment.
  • Inspect, report, remedy, repair any hazards, damage, vandalism and unsafe conditions for any recreation facility that includes but is not limited to buildings, pavilions/shelters, parks, playgrounds, and courts.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance of equipment, machinery, vehicles and various components of the Park District system.
  • Prepare and maintain various facilities including but not limited to athletic fields, swimming pools, equestrian center and recreational buildings.
  • Cleans, maintains, and stocks restrooms/facilities/rental areas.
  • Rakes, gathers, loads and hauls refuse and cut vegetation from parks and recreational facilities in order to clean park grounds, structures, and playing fields of trash and debris.
  • General turf maintenance including but is not limited to watering, mowing, weed control, restoration, and fertilization.
  • Landscape maintenance including but not limited to trimming, pruning, planting, raking, tilling, weed control and cleaning.
  • Ice making, ice maintenance, ice removal, snow plowing, and snow removal.
  • Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks, recreational facilities, and equipment, with appropriate supervision or direction.
  • Apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely and in accordance with procedures.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Demonstrate, support, and enforce Park District customer service standards.
  • Safely operate district vehicles and equipment.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Park District's safety program.
  • Assist in other sections of the department as assigned or required.
  • This position may include weekend shifts and/or weekend coverage.
  • Performs any additional related tasks as assigned or required.
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Practical knowledge or the ability to obtain such regarding the operation and care of equipment and tools in maintenance operations.
  • Ability and willingness to follow direction.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently with little supervision, as a team member on a crew, and to direct and oversee the work of seasonal or temporary staff.
