Qualifications

• Prefer previous experience working with children who have special needs.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Attends training/inservice opportunities as required.
• Keeps information related to individual children and families confidential.
• Check e-mail daily. E-mail teacher progress reports three times per week, for those students you assist in general education classes.
• Performs errands and tasks for students, only if they cannot do it themselves.
• Under supervision of the special education teacher, works with individuals or small groups to work on lessons initially introduced by the special education teacher.
• Accompanies the student(s) as needed when trips to the office or to the school nurse are necessary.
• Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
• Provides personal hygiene activities with students, including appropriate response to various body fluids.
• Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and follows through on prescribed behavioral management programs.
