PORTER COUNTY EDUCATION SERVICES SCHOOL DISTRICT seeks a paraprofessional interpreter for Westchester Middle School, in the Duneland School Corporation. Under supervision, you will facilitate ASL communication for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to meet instructional goals.

You will work with students individually or in small groups, assist with lesson materials, participate in field trips, maintain records, and help manage behavior to keep learners on task and safe.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of ASL and willingness to continue learning ASL.
  • Ability to follow instructions in written or oral form.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Ability to build supportive relationships with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with students and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist certified staff and interpreters to support Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in classroom activities.
  • Interpret for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students using ASL.
  • Support students individually and in small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Assist with lesson materials and instructional activities.
  • Document student progress and maintain records.
  • Help manage classroom behavior and safety.
  • Accompany students on field trips to facilitate communication.
  • Support participation in daily living activities to maximize learning.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures applicable to all students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job description

PCES paraprofessionals work days are based on a school year calendar. We have a position available in the Duneland School Corporation at Westchetster Middle School.

Essential Job Functions
  • Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, a paraprofessional interpreter will assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, faciliating language and communication for Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students using American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Interprets for Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students using American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Accompanies students on field trips for the purpose of facilitating language and communication.
  • Assist students with facilitating language and communication with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.
