Position Summary
Provides emergency medical care, both on-scene and during transport, to patients in the hospital's service area. These roles often involve direct patient care, utilizing basic life support (BLS) or advanced life support (ALS) skills, and working closely with hospital staff. The specific responsibilities can range from responding to 911 calls to assisting with patient transfers and providing specialized care within the hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Facility, Vehicle, & Equipment Maintenance: Ensure staff office, sleep rooms, and garage(s) are clean and organized; perform routine equipment checks and vehicle inspections; maintain ambulance cleanliness and organization; ensure adequate supply levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment; report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.
- Emergency Response Patient Care & Transport: Respond promptly to emergency medical calls; assess patient’s conditions quickly; provide appropriate emergency medical care; stabilize patients for safe transport; monitor patients continuously; administer medications and perform procedures within scope; operate equipment; communicate effectively; maintain patient safety, confidentiality, and dignity.
- Communication & Documentation: Review staff communication tools; respond to scheduling communications; complete detailed patient care reports; communicate patient information clearly; coordinate with dispatch, law enforcement, fire department; complete Payroll Book entries; complete all hospital required documentation.
- Safety & Quality: Follow all safety guidelines; participate in quality improvement activities and case reviews.
- Clinical and Non-Clinical Assistance: Provide clinical assistance consistent with scope; provide non-clinical assistance such as security rounds.
- EMS Knowledge and Skills Maintenance: Maintain clinical knowledge via continuing education; maintain skill competency.
- Education and Community Outreach: Provide education and training for organization; participate in public health initiatives and outreach activities.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Certification and Licensing: Current State of Iowa certification as an EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, Paramedic-CCP, or RN Exempt; Current Iowa "Class C - Operator" driver’s license; Current AHA BLS; Current AHA ACLS (paramedic-level); Current State of Iowa Mandatory Reporter training.
- Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of state-approved EMS training program or nursing program; previous EMS experience preferred.
- Technical Skills: Basic office/computer knowledge; medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology; teamwork; communication; situational awareness; situational resiliency; emergency vehicle operation; patient assessment; emergency medical care; equipment operation; transportation; documentation.

Physical Activity Requirements
Physical demands: Sedentary work up to 10 lbs occasionally; Light work up to 20 lbs occasionally; Medium work up to 50 lbs occasionally; Heavy work up to 100 lbs occasionally; Very heavy work over 100 lbs occasionally. Activities include lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, operating equipment, driving ambulance, and other tasks as described.
