Job description

Provides basic and advanced life support and emergency pre-hospital care and rescue services to persons in medical emergencies or life-threatening disasters.

General Application Requirements:

  • Applicants must posses a current, valid certificate of completion of Paramedic Training as well as a current, valid, and unrestricted Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of EMS certification. Applicants possessing out of state or National Registry of EMT’s certifications must receive reciprocity in Pennsylvania prior to the date of appointment. Active and unrestricted certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Applicants must posses an Emergency Vehicle Driver Training certification accepted by EMS West at the time of appointment.
  • Applicants shall posses and maintain an active and unrestricted Class C Drivers License at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Applicants shall have current Pennsylvania Dept of Health, Bureau of EMS Protocol Updates as well as an active Healthcare Provider CPR Certification.
  • Must possess an active Child Line clearance upon appointment and throughout employment.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain medical command through UPMC Prehospital Care
NOTE: Ambulance and Chair EMS, Inc. as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes but is not limited to criminal background, driving record, and drug screening. Candidates may be disqualified from consideration from employment based on the results of their background investigation as it relates to the job for which the applicant is being considered.

Position Duties:

  • Drives or accompanies driver in emergency vehicle to the site of emergency as informed by ACEMS Dispatch or 911 Dispatcher.
  • Maintains radio or other contact as necessary with PSAP, ACEMS Dispatch, OIC, Hospital, and other public safety units.
  • Administers treatment within the scope of practice to sick or injured patients. Accompanies patient to hospital as a driver or provides prehospital care to the patient both in the vehicle or enroute to the facility.
  • Lift and carries patients on stretchers from routine or difficult access areas.
  • Completes patient care reports and all other required documentation such as insurance forms and signature forms either electronically or on hard copy.
  • Maintains adequate stock of equipment and supplies; washes and disinfects medical equipment, and maintains the readiness of the EMS vehicle.
  • Works all shifts, including weekends, overnights, and holidays.
  • Ensures vehicles are in working order at all times; reports any deficiencies to Officer in Charge.
  • Performs activities and functions of other personnel as assigned or required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of:

  • Pennsylvania Department of Health BLS/IALS/ALS Protocols and all techniques and procedures contained within.
  • Maintaining security and control of assigned medications.
Considerable Knowledge of:
  • Relevant anatomy and physiology
  • PA Motor Vehicle Code as it relates to the operation of emergency vehicles.
  • Airway techniques, IV therapy, and Medication administration.
  • Cardiology and management of crashing patients.
Ability to:
  • Move sick or injured persons on stretchers from routine and or difficult access areas.
  • Work quickly and for prolonged periods of time in emergency situations.
  • Complete patient care reports and all other required documentation.
  • Maintain/Stock/Disinfect all vehicles and apparatus.
  • Maintain current and unrestricted Pennsylvania Certification throughout employment.
  • Maintain a valid Class C driver’s license throughout employment.
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, patients, hospital staff, medical direction, and the general public.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Frequently:

  • Wetness (rain/snow), noise, fumes, operate vehicle on private property and public roads.
  • Operate with N95 particulate mask, surgical face mask, cloves, gowns, or other PPE.
  • Lifting: Must be able to lift 125 pounds alone and 250 pounds with a partner.
  • Vision – Frequently: Seeing-far, depth perception, and color vision
  • Hearing – Frequently: High acuity
