Job summary

West Virginia University Health System seeks a Paramedic to join the medical care team. You will render supportive care, sustain life at the scene, and begin corrective treatment under State Protocol during transport to a hospital.

Roles include prompt response to calls, patient care during transport, detailed reporting, and collaboration with law enforcement and other agencies as needed. Requires WV paramedic certification and National Registry where applicable.

Qualifications

  • Must hold paramedic certification as required by the state where services are provided.
  • National Registry Paramedic certification required unless WV state license only (SLO).
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire; ACLS within 60 days; PALS/PEPP within 60 days; ITLS or PHTLS within 60 days.
  • WV Paramedic C3 Endorsement may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly and efficiently to calls.
  • Provide care of patient prior to and during transport.
  • Accurately document handoff information to hospital.
  • Triage and establish priority of care as requested.
  • Assist in fire control at sites when other agencies are unavailable.
  • Coordinate with police in dangerous situations and be aware of legal responsibilities at scene.
  • Work in inclement weather and drive emergency vehicle under extreme conditions.
  • Attend court appearances when called by the State of West Virginia.

Job description

The Paramedic is a member of the medical care team trained and certified to render supportive care to the patient, sustain life at the scene of accidental injury or sudden illness during transport to a hospital, and is qualified to begin corrective treatment as directed under State Protocol or instructed by Medical Command.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess current certification as required by state board where services will be provided: OH: Paramedic Certification through Ohio Emergency Medical Services WV: Paramedic Certification through the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS)
  • Nationally registered as Paramedic: WV: Paramedic through National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (Unless WV state license is State License Only (SLO) OH: No National Registry required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS Certification within 60 days of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) OR Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) within 60 days of hire
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) OR Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) within 60 days of hire
  • Valid Driver’s license.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Six (6) months patient care To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)
  • Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course
  • WV Paramedic C3 Endorsement
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ACLS Instructor.
  • CPR Instructor.
  • One year college completion with emphasis on health care.
  • Associates Degree.
EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) year patient care experience.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for responding promptly and efficiently to calls.
  • Responsible for care of patient prior to and during transport.
  • Responsible for organized transfer of information to the hospital and accurate, complete and legible report and record keeping.
  • Performs duties of triage area and establishes appropriate priority of care as requested.
  • Responsible for assisting in fire control at sites when other supportive agencies are not available and a patient's life if endangered.
  • Responsible for working with deceased persons in all forms such as drowning victims, burned victims, decomposed victims, etc., as well as render medical care to bereaved families.
  • Responsible for cooperating with police agencies in various situations where a paramedic's life may be in danger and be aware of legal responsibilities at scene of the crime such as rape, child abuse, drug and alcohol related cases, etc.
  • Responsible for performing in inclement weather, providing minor vehicle maintenance and driving an emergency vehicle under extreme conditions such as heavy traffic, inclement weather and fog.
  • Responsible for attending court appearances when called by the State of West Virginia.
  • Upon completion of call/ exam, all paperwork is finished that deals with call/patient. Paperwork must be completed within 48 hours and entered into system.

  • Possess the ability to deal tactfully and harmoniously with guests.
  • Must have an awareness of hazardous materials required and mass causality incident training
