How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare

The Paramedic administers life support care and transport to patients in pre‑hospital settings as authorized and directed by a physician. The Paramedic performs a variety of skills related to acute and non‑acute settings in ground and/or air transport, responds to medical emergencies in a 911 setting, protects life, and administers cardiac and trauma support when needed. The Paramedic administers initial treatment at the emergency scene, assesses patient response, and makes adjustments as needed. The Paramedic gathers and analyzes information and uses reasoning when dealing with emotional topics. The Paramedic manages difficult customer situations and maintains confidentiality.

• Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
• Restore and stabilize heart rhythm on pulseless, non‑breathing patients.
• Initiate IV drugs to administer medication or replace fluids.
• Administer emergency procedures such as extrication of patient, intubation, defibrillation, and operate under ACLS protocol.
• Administer injections of medications and drugs.
• Initiate invasive and non‑invasive treatment at an advanced level; treat life‑threatening arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, shock, and trauma, specializing in pediatric care.
• Observe, record, and report to physician or command‑center leader the patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
• Maintain current knowledge of treatment techniques, protocol changes, and application of new drugs, materials, and equipment.
• Take responsibility for own actions and those of support team members.
• Prepare required reports and maintain records of activities.
• Obtain patient information needed for insurance billings and know covered and non‑covered charges related to ambulance services and insurance guidelines.
• Coordinate activities with external entities when needed.
• Check daily units assigned, clean and stock supplies, and report any malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic.
• Maintain supplies and use resources appropriately.
• Transport patients to hospital and non‑hospital sites while observing safety guidelines.

What We Require

Education: High school graduate or equivalent required.

Experience: No experience required.

Licensure/Certification: Certified in the state of Virginia as a Paramedic. AHA BLS‑HCP. ACLS, PALS, HazMat Awareness, NRP, and PHTLS or BTLS required within one year from date of hire.

Other: Maintains advanced transport medical knowledge and abilities; maintains an excellent driving record and may operate vehicle to emergency scene; must maintain continuing education hours to meet recertification status as required by state and national standards; must provide current driving record and meet driver eligibility requirements for all driver positions; utilizes excellent communication skills in dealing with staff, peers, patients, and family members in diverse situations; writes clearly and presents numerical data/patient reports effectively; maintains knowledge of basic computer skills and applicable software.

Compensation

Paramedic rate starts at $25.77, with credit for experience.
