The Paramedic provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) services, delivering quality pre-hospital emergency care and transportation to individuals of all ages. The role involves safe and prompt patient transportation, often in hazardous or uncontrolled environments, requiring critical thinking to assess, triage, communicate, treat, and transport patients in various settings, including emergency and non-emergency situations. The paramedic must coordinate seamlessly with emergency agencies and healthcare providers, complete patient care reports, and support departmental operations in accordance with New Jersey guidelines and HMH protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to emergency calls.
  • Support public safety personnel and healthcare providers in patient care.
  • Perform assessments, utilize critical thinking, and prioritize medical procedures based on patient condition.
  • Modify care according to patient needs, including age, culture, and impairments, communicating effectively with patients and caregivers.
  • Gather essential data and perform physical examinations to inform interventions.
  • Report medical information to the medical control physician accurately and timely.
  • Ensure patient comfort during transport and operate emergency vehicles safely and professionally.
  • Conduct daily vehicle and equipment checks, maintain cleanliness, and ensure readiness of supplies.
  • Use communication devices professionally to coordinate dispatch and medical control.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, document patient care, and complete all reports in compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicle functionality, troubleshoot issues, and report hazards.
  • Adhere to all safety, health, and confidentiality policies, including proper disposal of waste and handling of controlled substances.
  • Provide education and training within scope, and serve as a preceptor or Field Training Officer as assigned.
  • Maintain current certifications and participate in ongoing training to ensure clinical competency.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and participate in service recovery when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Skills:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Completion of ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700, IS-800.D, and other relevant incident management courses.
  • Excellent communication skills, proficiency with computers, including MS Office or Google Suite.

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic or equivalent certification.
  • AHA BLS/HCP, ACLS, PALS certifications.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and EVOC certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Trauma Life Support certifications within 6 months of hire.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and EMS Operations certifications within 6 months of hire.

Working Conditions

  • Lifting and carrying patients and equipment, climbing in/out of ambulances, standing for extended periods.
