Job summary

Southeast Georgia Health System is seeking a Paramedic for the Emergency Department at the Camden Campus. The position supports critical patient care at night, including airway management, ventilation, monitoring, and procedures under physician direction.

Two years of paramedic experience is preferred; Georgia licensure is required. ACLS/PALS within 6 months and BLS within the first week of orientation are expected.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Apply oxygen and assist airway management with multiple devices.
• Ventilation management using bag-valve-mask and CPAP/BiPAP as directed.
• Obtain vitals and perform routine and complex assessments.
• Assist with procedures including chest tube placement under physician direction.
• Administer medications under protocols following physician order.
• Perform EKGs, respond to Code Blue and monitor in ECC and hospitalwide.
• Triaging patients and guiding to appropriate care areas.
• Document patient information accurately and timely.
• Contribute to performance improvement activities.
• Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges where needed.
• Maintain infection control and privacy standards for patients.
• Provide patient education on self-care and follow-up as assigned.
• Maintain readiness with environment safety and equipment checks.
• Support in teaching patients self-care techniques and mobility aids.
• Maintain accurate records of vital signs, labs, and treatments.

Essential Responsibilities: This description of job responsibilities is intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but is not intended to describe minor duties or other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

1.

Apply oxygen via nasal cannula, venti mask, blow by and non-rebreather. Manual maneuvers to open and control the airway. Insertion of airway adjuncts into oropharynx, nasopharynx.

2.

Ventilation management – Bag Valve Mask. Suctioning – upper mouth, and upper airway.

3.

CPAP/BiPAP administration and management.

4.

Chest tube monitoring. Assist physician with placement.

5.

Perform simple and comprehensive patient assessment. Able to function paired with a RN for patient assignment.

6.

Obtains vitals signs manually and automatically. Holter Monitor applications, B/P monitor applications, SpO2 monitor applications, ETcO2 monitor applications. Blood chemistry analysis. Demonstrates competent Foley catheter insertion using the sterilization technique.

7.

Obtaining peripheral venous blood specimens. Peripheral IV insertion and maintenance; includes removal as needed. Utilizes correct procedure for the collection, labeling, and transport of specimens. Able to place External Jugular as well as Ultrasound guided IV’s. Administers medications following BLS, ACLS, PALS protocols under physician direction.

8.

Interosseous device insertion and removal. Manual external CPR.

9.

Performs routine EKGs (monitoring and interpretation), Responds to Code Blue and other monitoring situations in the ECC as well as throughout the hospital.

10.

Manual cervical stabilization and cervical collar use. Manual stabilization of orthopedic trauma. Spinal motion restriction. Splinting.

11.

Contributes to patient data base by collecting and documenting information such as height, weight, allergies, vital signs and intake and output measurements. Assists with patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, or discharges. Always correctly identifies patient by name and assures that proper name band is secured to wrist prior to meals, procedures and treatments.

12.

Accurately and timely reports observations, vital signs, or other pertinent patient information to Licensed Independent Practitioner.

13.

Demonstrates awareness of environmental stimuli and seeks to minimize harmful or stressful factors; i.e., noise, temperature, light and odors. Provides for the privacy of patients and families and keeping the safety of the patient in mind.

14.

Assists in teaching patients self care, to include crutch walking, catheter care, and splint care, and encourages patients to achieve independence within their limitations.

15.

Performs Triage function in Emergency Care Center setting. Accurately sorts patients and guides them to start of care in HUB or Main ECC. Main patients would need cardiac monitor, non-ambulatory, or psych crises.

16.

Identifies opportunities for improvement and participates in performance improvement activities as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

High school graduate or equivalent required.

Experience

Two years of experience as a paramedic in the field or in a hospital setting preferred.

Completion of accredited paramedic program and associated clinical hours.

Licensure

Paramedic Licensure to practice in the State of Georgia

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

American Heart Association BLS Certification required within the first week of orientation and maintained through employment. ACLS & PALS within 6 months of hire.
