Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION


JOB SUMMARY: Provides emergency care to patients according to treatment protocols in accordance with NCCEP protocols set forth by the N.C. Office of EMS (NCOEMS). Involves serving as a care team member in the Emergency Department in accordance to the Scope of Practice set forth by the Non-Traditional Practice Setting Agreement with N.C. Office of EMS and the Medical Center/hospital. Serves patients across various age categories: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Paramedic certification from an accredited program, or an Associate's of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in paramedic studies or equivalent. Three years of Emergency Service experience preferred.


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: BCLS and NC-OEMS certification as EMT-P required. ACLS or PALS may be required within one year in select areas. Critical care certificate or national registry paramedic preferred. Maintains certification through approved NC-OEMS education provider.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides patient/family centered care, focusing on physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Includes rapid evaluation of emergencies and collaboration with the team.
  2. Maintains a safe, respectful environment, ensuring patient privacy and utilizing technology and equipment effectively.
  3. Communicates effectively to share information across the care continuum.
  4. Participates in professional practice models, including shared governance, peer review, and professional development.
  5. Acts as a patient advocate throughout the care continuum and community.
  6. Identifies clinical priorities and initiates actions to improve outcomes.
  7. Uses medications, treatments, and protocols within scope, under physician orders.
  8. Performs and maintains competency in point of care testing, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.
  9. Documents medications and treatments in the Electronic Medical Record.
  10. Re-assesses patients and documents findings per hospital policy.
  11. Demonstrates teamwork within the Emergency Department.
  12. Supports evidence-based practices, research, and quality initiatives.
  13. Upholds the organization's patient promise.
  14. Facilitates patient flow and ensures safety and security of patients.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to provide direct and indirect patient care.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to verbal and nonverbal cues from patients of all ages.
  • Builds rapport with staff, providers, patients, and visitors.
  • Ability to push stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and position patients using assistive devices or personnel.
  • Computer skills for electronic documentation.
  • Compliance with applicable laws, policies, and protocols.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Handles emergency and crisis situations.
  • Subject to stressful, crowded conditions and interruptions.
  • Wears PPE as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Activities include standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing, and lifting weights up to 100 lbs. as appropriate.
