Job description

Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, an international law firm, is actively recruiting an experienced paralegal to join its Intellectual Property practice group. The Trademark Paralegal will coordinate and monitor all aspects of intellectual property practice as it relates to trademark under the supervision of the firm’s Intellectual Property lawyers.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Generates revenue by meeting billable hour and other timekeeping expectations set forth by the firm. Proactively secures billable work, which may require working across teams and offices. Maintains current and accurate daily time log; inputs time records into firm's time and accounting systems according to firm and outside counsel guidelines.
  • Prepares simple and complex trademark filings to be made with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Processes U.S. Patent and Trademark Office communications and coordinates with attorneys; handles communicating with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office both telephonically and through filings to ensure that all documents are handled correctly.
  • Maintains and monitors docket for U.S. and foreign trademark applications and registered trademarks, including any and all due dates and deadlines; communicates with lawyers and performs necessary tasks in a timely fashion; communicates with foreign associates directly concerning client trademark applications/prosecution requirements; collaborates with IP Docket team.
  • Reviews and prepares materials for trademark attorneys for upcoming client meetings, including PowerPoint presentations and appropriate documentation; developing presentations to clients concerning the handling of their cases, transfer of cases, docketing and trademark prosecution etc. Communicates with clients as appropriate.
  • Stays current about new Trademark Office Rules and filing procedures (EFT filings), alerts lawyers of new procedures and rules relating to intellectual property practice and attends appropriate training classes offered by USPTO and other governmental bodies.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred. Paralegal certificate, National Association of Legal Assistants certification or specialty certificate provided by State helpful.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of paralegal or related business experience required; previous experience coordinating paralegal work or case clerks helpful. Previous trademark paralegal experience preferred.
  • Other Qualifications: Compliance with Firm in-office policy required. Intermediate knowledge and application of Federal, State and Local Rules. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic technological and research skills necessary to pull requested documents from online resources and familiarity with legal technology and computer databases required. Ability to train other paralegals and work efficiently and accurately under pressure, and present a positive, professional image with colleagues, professional staff, and vendors. Ability to work overtime or travel, as needed, on short notice essential. Ability to work well under pressure, patience, diplomacy, high stress tolerance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions. Visual acuity needed for transcription, extensive reading and moderate or advanced keyboard usage. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through both written and oral communications. Ability to lift, carry, reach, stoop or bend, at times repetitively, for tasks involving filing or movement of files/supplies weighing up to 5-10 pounds. Essential competency processes include language ability, reasoning and memory. Ability to maintain flexibility regarding work assignments to work overtime on short notice required. Ability to work in a cooperative manner as a member of a team. To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must possess the abilities or aptitudes to proficiently perform each of the responsibilities and accountabilities described above, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The expected salary range for Washington, DC based employees is $88,100 – $120,100, though salaries for employees based outside of Washington, DC may differ. Beyond an employment candidate's physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, training and/or experience.

The expected salary range for Richmond, VA based employees is $85,600 – $115,150, though salaries for employees based outside of Richmond, VA may differ. Beyond an employment candidate's physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, training and/or experience.
