An accredited Associate's degree or higher in paralegal or legal assistant studies, or a related field, plus five (5) years’ experience as a paralegal or performing office support work in a legal setting.
Certified Legal Assistant/Paralegal (CLA/CP) certification conferred by NALA, or Paralegal Core Competency Exam (PCCE) certification or Paralegal Advance Competency Exam (PACE) certification conferred by NFPA, or graduation from an accredited school of law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence required by time of application.
Under general supervision, perform routine to advance paralegal services to include research and document preparation for assigned attorney(s).
Perform routine to advance paralegal services. Involves: Conduct research and analysis of facts and applicable laws and cases, including those pertaining to issues of difficult or unusual nature, as instructed by the attorney being supported. Confer with attorney to devise suitable methods and set defensible standards. Use on-line research services and other computer-based and written resources. Request information pursuant to applicable statutes and regulations. Assist with investigation of facts, statutes, regulations and case law to identify causes of action and prepare cases appropriately. Assist with the conducting of interviews, and application of other techniques to obtain pertinent information regarding legal matters. Track legislation and liaison services in area of assignment, if required. Independently compose, proofread, and correct legal correspondence and related documents for review and approval of the attorney being supported, and for the signature of the City Attorney, or designees, as required. Involves: Prepare initial and final drafts including, but not limited to, business letters, internal memoranda, legal opinions, appeals, pleadings, subpoenas, interrogatories, requests for production, deposition notices, ordinances, resolutions, settlement agreements, contracts, deeds and debt collection and similar instruments using a personal computer and word processing software. Prepare and assemble administrative and litigation reports. Perform transcription of dictated correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other legal documents. Monitor and perform maintenance of legal filing system and law library, and allied records management. Involves: Conduct data entry, review and update legal, utility master, legislative folders, binders and electronic media, and TPIA logs. File legal documents with court clerks and administrative agencies. Engage in records management of workers' compensation, environmental, bankruptcy, personnel, prosecution and other legal matters, compilation and recording of statistics on closed and archived files. Ensure legal and other textbooks, reference manuals and periodicals are up to date, cataloged, cross-indexed and shelved in an orderly manner. As authorized/assigned, may direct the work of others, including, but not limited to, assign work, delegate, review, inspect or accept work completed. Guide task performance. Train and develop employees. Prepare employees’ performance appraisals. Recall employees to work in emergencies. Resolve complaints. Recommend disciplinary action, vacation time approve and merit pay.
