Job summary

The Division of Administrative Law within the State Civil Service of Louisiana seeks a Paralegal with experience in a Clerk of Court’s office or as a legal secretary to a managing partner to support a Deputy General Counsel.

Location may be in Baton Rouge; temporary appointments will handle a surge of cases. Preferred ABA-approved program, CP certification, and a JD are required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an ABA-approved Paralegal/Legal Assistant program.
  • CP certification by NALAC is preferred.
  • A Juris Doctorate is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Deputy General Counsel with preparing legal documents and orders.
  • Review incoming appeals requests.
  • Review and prepare routine orders for signature.
  • Prepare orders terminating adjudications for signature.
  • Review notices and orders.
  • Prepare Minute Entry Orders for record review cases.
  • Conduct research and draft legal memoranda.

Job description

The Division of Administrative Law is Louisiana's centralized administrative hearings panel. When disputes arise between certain state agencies and the people and entities they regulate, administrative law judges at DAL provide fair, prompt, and orderly adjudications.

We're seeking a Paralegal with experience working in a Clerk of Court's office, for a centralized administrative hearings panel, a judicial or executive branch judge, a court's chief judicial administrator, or as a legal secretary to a managing partner.

  • Making Accurate Judgments: The ability to assess options, weigh risks, and make sound decisions using available information and logical reasoning.
  • Managing Time: The ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and allocate time to ensure timely completion of work goals.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an approved Paralegal or Legal Assistant program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), or at an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of a Certified Paralegal (CP) certification issued by the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc.
  • A Juris Doctorate.

NOTE: Disbarred attorneys and those who have permanently resigned from the practice of law in lieu of discipline may not be hired in any position in connection with the practice of law. Suspended attorneys or an attorney transferred to disability inactive status during the period of suspension may not be hired in any position in connection with the practice of law unless such hiring is first preceded by the submission of a fully executed registration statement to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, on a registration form provided by the Louisiana Disciplinary Board and approved by the Louisiana Supreme Court. See Rule 5.5(e)(1) of the Louisiana Rules of Professional Conduct; In Re Davenport, 2021-01371 (La. 11/3/21) and 326 So.3d 882; In re Sharp, 2012-2463 (La. 1/11/13), 106 So.3d 105. The hiring agency is responsible for conducting the necessary background checks prior to appointment.
