Job summary

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is seeking a Paralegal within the Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records Practice Group. The role focuses on assisting attorneys in civil enforcement, tax, and elections matters and includes redacting public records under Arizona law.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance and two years of experience OR
  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies + Two years of legal support experience OR
  • Bachelor's or higher in paralegal studies or related field with no experience required OR
  • Bachelor's or higher in an unrelated field + Associate or Certification in paralegal studies - no experience required OR
  • Two years of paralegal experience + Two years of legal support experience

Responsibilities

  • Conducts legal research and provides summaries
  • Prepares documents and exhibits
  • Assembles necessary information for legal proceedings
  • Drafts a variety of legal documents
  • Maintains case files and case logs
  • Reviews legal documents for completeness and conformance to specific requirements
  • Interviews witnesses and clients to obtain or clarify case preparation information
  • Identifies deficiencies and discrepancies detected during file and document examination and takes appropriate action
  • Manages litigation calendars and monitors court deadlines to ensure timely filings
  • Communicates with clients, government agencies, opposing counsel, expert witnesses, and court personnel
  • Coordinates the intake, tracking, and processing of public records requests in accordance with applicable state public records laws and agency policies
  • Monitors changes in court rules, public records laws, election laws, tax statutes, and administrative procedures affecting litigation support

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

As a Paralegal within the Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records Practice Group of the Civil Services Division, your primary focus involves assisting and working with attorneys assigned to civil enforcement, tax, and elections matters. The position also involves redacting public records consistent with Arizona law.

About Us

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities. We also provide legal advice to County officials. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records. With this opening, the Civil Services Division is looking to add one Paralegal to its Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records Practice Group.

  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance and two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administration OR
  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies + Two years of legal support experience needed OR
  • Bachelor's or higher in paralegal studies, legal assistant, or a related field - no experience needed OR
  • Bachelor's or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies - no experience needed OR
  • Two years of paralegal experience + Two years of legal support experience

Working Conditions
  • Office and courtroom setting in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations
  • May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing and moving about while performing duties
  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, using personal or county-owned vehicles
  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds from floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds a distance of up to 100 feet
