Job summary

Amentum in Norfolk, VA seeks a Paralegal/Legal Assistant I to work under supervision providing essential legal support across the case lifecycle. You will draft subpoenas, review documents, and manage case data, with opportunities to assist in discovery and trial preparation.

The role requires paralegal certification or active ABA law school enrollment, and experience with LEXIS/Westlaw, CaseView, and NetDocs is valued. A government security clearance may be required for this position.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
  • Requires paralegal certificate or currently attending ABA-accredited law school.
  • One year of legal training or legal experience or two years of college may substitute for paralegal certificate.
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience is required; trial experience helpful.
  • Automated litigation support experience valued.
  • Familiarity with LEXIS and Westlaw for basic legal research.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; proficient with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Familiarity with ESI tools and eDiscovery procedures.

Job description

The Paralegal/Legal Assistant I works under close supervision with required assistance readily available. Persons in this position typically perform the following:

  • Consult prescribed sources of information for facts relating to matters of interest to the program;

  • Review documents to extract selected data and information relating to specific items;

  • Draft grand jury subpoenas using a template.

  • Obtain records and documents from federal law enforcement agencies.

  • Open and close cases in CaseView and NetDocs.

  • Assist with producing discovery to defense counsel.

  • Provides trial preparation by compiling document notebooks.

  • Review and summarize information in prescribed format on case precedent and decisions;

  • Search and extract legal references in libraries and computer-data banks;

  • Attend hearings or court appearances to become informed on administrative and/or court procedures and the status of cases, and where necessary, assist in the presentation of charts and other visual information.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.

  • Requires paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.

  • One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.

  • Additionally, at least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required; trial experience very helpful.

  • Automated litigation support experience valued.

  • Must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.

  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.

  • Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.

  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be cashed out to the employee on a 1 pay period lag.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.

Compensation Details:

$22.65
