Job summary

Hall Booth Smith, P.C.'s Charleston office in Mount Pleasant, SC seeks an experienced paralegal to support our Construction Litigation and Insurance Coverage teams.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience, preferably involving construction defect litigation, commercial litigation, and/or insurance coverage matters, and a strong working knowledge of both South Carolina and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience supporting attorneys in litigation, including with insurers, clients, adjusters, and outside counsel.
  • Strong understanding of legal language, research, pleadings, and discovery processes.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function in a high-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting multiple attorneys and matters.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys in complex state and federal cases from initial pleadings through trial.
  • Perform initial case assessments to determine further document discovery.
  • Draft pleadings, scheduling orders, and motions for state and federal court.
  • Prepare and manage written discovery, including drafting requests/responses and reviewing productions.
  • Organize, review, and summarize construction project records, contracts, drawings, and claim files.
  • Assist with coverage analysis support, including organization of policy materials.
  • Coordinate and prepare subpoenas for records and depositions.
  • Communicate professionally with experts, insurers, clients, witnesses, and opposing counsel.
  • Schedule depositions, mediations, inspections, expert meetings, and hearings.
  • Assist with trial preparation, including notebooks, exhibits, witness prep, and courtroom support.
  • Meet billing requirement of ~140 hours per month.
  • Support attorneys during mediations and trials.

The Charleston, South Carolina office of Hall Booth Smith, P.C. is seeking an experienced paralegal to support our Construction Litigation and Insurance Coverage practice teams. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience, preferably involving construction defect litigation, commercial litigation, and/or insurance coverage matters, and a strong working knowledge of both South Carolina and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. This position is well-suited for a proactive, detail-oriented paralegal who is comfortable assisting with cases from inception through trial and working closely with attorneys, clients, experts, and other professionals in fast-paced, multi-party litigation involving large document productions and complex claims.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive litigation support in state and federal construction-related and insurance coverage disputes. Candidates should be self-starters who take ownership of their cases, anticipate needs, and thrive in a collaborative litigation environment.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Assist attorney(s) in complex state and federal cases from initial pleadings through trial;
  • Perform initial case assessments to determine further document discovery to facilitate initial investigation of claim;
  • Draft pleadings, scheduling orders, and motions for state and federal court;
  • Prepare and manage written discovery, including drafting discovery requests and responses, coordinating and reviewing document productions, and preparing privilege logs
  • Organize, review, and summarize construction project records, contracts, drawings, correspondence, expert materials, and claim files
  • Assist with coverage analysis support, including organization of policy materials and claim documentation
  • Coordinate and prepare subpoenas for records and depositions
  • Communicate professionally with experts, insurance adjusters, clients, witnesses, and opposing counsel;
  • Schedule depositions, mediations, inspections, expert meetings, and hearings
  • Assist with trial preparation, including trial notebooks, exhibits, witness preparation, and courtroom support
  • Meet a billing requirement of approximately 140 hours per month
  • Support attorneys during mediations and trials, including jury selection assistance where applicable
