Qualifications

  • High School Diploma; preferred associates/paralegal cert or commensurate experience.
  • 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Cross-training in multiple areas is expected.

Level up your career through a large network and specialty training.If you're passionate about making a difference, apply today to join us in serving the community!Job Description:JOB SUMMARYThe Register of Wills accepts and maintains filings for probate and appoints representatives of estates.The full-time paralegal is responsible for accepting and processing probate petitions and related filings, maintaining a working knowledge of the PEF Code, preparing citations, Register's decrees, typing letters and subpoenas, scheduling and hosting virtual probate proceedings, analyzing legal issues under the PEF Code, tracking when Estate representatives do not comply with filing requirements, accepting Orphans' Court and Inheritance Tax filings and payments, and processing mail and phone requests.Assist in all aspects of office-wide scanning initiative by scanning all documents into electronic case management system.Responsibilities also include overseeing and training of probate clerks, actively participating in meetings with software provider and conducting testing and providing back up to the marriage clerk.Employee will also be responsible for the collection of money taken in during the business day and reconciling the amount of monies collected with the supervisor at the end of each day.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPSReports to Chief DeputyESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSAccept and input probates and related filingsPrepare probate documents for pick-up or mailingProcess short certificate requestsProcess mail and phone requestsPrepare citations & Register's decreesType letters for the Register & prepare subpoenasSchedule & host virtual probate proceedingsScan documentsBack up Marriage Clerk as needed by processing marriage applications, preparing certified duplicate marriage licenses, processing mail requests, and inputting marriage returnsAssist with daily depositTesting of software programs as neededOTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIESAccept Orphans' Court filings and payments at counterAccept Inheritance Tax filings and payments at counterProcess requests for exemplifications and certified willsMaintain forms supply for counter useDocketingAnswering telephones for all departments as neededFiling documentsAssist the Deputy Clerk of Orphans' Court as neededAssist Inheritance Tax Clerk as neededAssist Chief Deputy as neededMaintain working knowledge of PEF CodeMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSHigh School Diploma; Preferred Associates Degree/paralegal studies certification, or commensurate prior experience.1 year of relevant experience.Significant experience with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel.Experience in legal field desirable.Must be cross trained or have applicable experience in at least three different areas related to the office's core objectives and assist in those areas on a regular basis.Able to maintain confidentiality.Able to multi-task and organize work.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge of Probate and Marriage law helpfulExcellent organizational skillsExcellent communication skillsProfessional customer serviceAttention to detailSolid mathematical skillsREQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCESNonePHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is primarily sedentary in nature.No special demands are required.The County of Lancaster offers comprehensive benefits to our employees.
