Job Description

Meridian School is a separate school placement for students with significant support needs. The school is located on ESU 13's main campus in Scottsbluff. It has 3 classrooms for students age 5 to 21. Meridian focuses on life skill academics and functional skills. Students participate in leveled, age‑appropriate math, literacy, science, social studies, and social‑emotional curriculum. In addition, students have music class and participate in a community bell choir. They attend the YMCA for swimming and physical education class. Students who are of transition age have work‑based learning experiences with the support of a job coach, a transition skills class, and the RPAD program – an apartment where students work on independent living skills like cooking, shopping, and home care.

Job Title: Paraeducator

Department: Special Education

Education Level: High school diploma. Valid driver’s license to transport students safely to and from school.

Reports to: Special Education Coordinator

Terms of Employment: 190 day position / Schedule 4

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks
  • Provide assistance to students with special needs, non‑English‑speaking students, students with physical and mental disabilities, or other students as assigned.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, or on field trips.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Observe students’ performance and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role‑playing methods.
  • Organize and label materials and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye levels and perceptual skills.
  • Distribute tests and homework assignments and collect them when completed.
  • Use computers, audio‑visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees, as required.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of special education teachers, psychologists, speech‑language pathologists or other professionals.
  • Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
  • Assist in bus loading and unloading.
  • Transport students to and from school as needed.
  • Maintain computers in classrooms and laboratories and assist students with hardware and software use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Principal’s designee.
Working Conditions
  • Inside heated and air‑conditioned classroom.
  • Outside for activities with students and student supervision.
  • Exposure to incidents of aggression when working with students with behavioral impairments.

At‑Will Position. This position is an “at‑will” position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the ESU 13 Administrator or ESU 13 Administrator’s designee.
