Job summary

Mount Vernon School District 320 Washington Elementary in Mount Vernon, WA seeks a Paraeducator for supervision and multilingual support. You will assist supervising teachers, provide tutor intervention, and support students ages 4-5 in classroom settings from September to June.

Job Description
BENEFIT INFORMATION

Eligibility for SEBB medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, and LTD if anticipated to reach 630 hours in the school year. Eligibility for retirement based on 3.50 hrs/day or more for 5 or more consecutive months. Optional tax-sheltered annuities: Omni 403(b) and Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave, vacation leave (260-day employees only), and sick leave prorated based on FTE.

Selection for interview is based on evaluation of complete application file. Employment offer is based on employee evaluations, discipline history and attendance records, training and experience, references, and interview results. Hourly rate placement contingent upon verification of related WA public school experience.

This position is included in the classified staff non-supervisory bargaining unit. Union shop requirements and the Collective Bargaining Agreement apply to this position.

Employment contingent upon completion and verification of form information and background check with fee to be paid by applicant.

Pay for contracted classified employees is distributed once/month on the last business day of the month. Pay for employees who work less than full year is spread through August. Questions concerning pay processes may be directed to the Personnel Office.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Building Principal and / or Certificated Teacher

Work Year: 180 Days

POSITION SUMMARY:

Work under the direction and in cooperation with a certificated staff member.

  • From September to October, the paraeducator will assist supervising teacher(s) by providing tutor intervention support.
  • From November to June, the paraeducator will work with individual and small groups of students ages 4-5 in a classroom setting. The paraeducator may also provide supervision duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At a minimum, AA degree or higher, or two years of college (72 quarter credits), or
  • Ability to meet State-determined performance standards in reading, math and writing (i.e., para-educator assessment).
  • Previous experience working with kindergarten students or preschool age children is preferred.
  • Bilingual/literate in Spanish and English required with a minimum score of Intermediate High on the oral component and Intermediate Mid on the writing component of ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Spanish language proficiency test.
  • Must possess a current Washington State Driver’s license and provide proof of automobile insurance and be able to travel.
  • Must be able to operate standard office equipment plus computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google applications and willingness to learn Skyward, MSIS, and other student data management systems.
  • Must be able to operate standard office equipment.
  • Must be flexible, have the ability to work with all types of people and be attentive to detail/paperwork.
  • Must be able to understand the process related to learning concepts in a variety of topics.
  • Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and foster effective communication and relationships with others.
  • Ability to handle student information in a confidential manner.
  • Must be able to work with staff and students, including the monitoring and disciplining of student activities.
  • Must be able to function in a calm, efficient and courteous manner, under stress, and to exercise careful judgment, confidentiality and tact in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours specified under contract.
  • Must professionally interact with culturally diverse students, staff and members of the public.
  • Must establish professional and ongoing contacts with students.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid First Aid certificate and CPR training.
    • Must comply with all district policies and comply with the code of professional conduct.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with individual and small groups of students, ages 4-5 in a classroom setting.
  • Assist supervising teacher(s) by providing tutor intervention support, supervising student work, reporting on progress, organizing materials, setting up projects and giving support as needed.
  • Assist students in accessing educational software programs or other technology appropriate to the student’s learning targets.
  • May be required to perform routine office functions.
  • Supervise and direct students in various environments such as classroom, playground, recess periods and lunch room.
  • Assist in administering student discipline.
  • Perform minor first aid and monitor student safety.
  • Providing personal care support (such as toileting) may be required.
  • Perform such other duties as, from time to time, may be required.
