Job summary

The US Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings & Grounds, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Painting Night Section, is seeking a Painter-Refinisher to refinishi doors, door frames and other woodwork, including projects with historic colors, complex striping, designs and panel refinishing.

Work involves preparing surfaces, applying stains and protective coatings, and producing a final finish that matches documented samples with attention to detail and quality, under supervision as

  • Experience restoring historic wood surfaces with proper stripping, sanding and repairs.

Join our team as a Painter-Refinisher located in the esteemed Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings & Grounds, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Painting Night Section. As a Painter-Refinisher you will be responsible for refinishing doors, door frames and other woodwork. You will participate in projects involving historical colors, complex striping, designs and panel refinishing.


You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement.


You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position.


Ability to perform Painter-Refinisher duties and responsibilities without more than normal supervision including:



  • Using a computerized maintenance management system (e.g., WebTMA) to receive, update, and close work orders, accurately document work performed, and track materials and job status;

  • Safely prepare and repair historic wood surfaces, demonstrated through proper use of stripping methods, sanding techniques, and repair practices that preserve original detailing;

  • Independently performing wood finishing and refinishing tasks including applying stains, varnishes, oils, paints, and protective coatings; and

  • Producing a final finish that matches an existing or documented sample for color, grain, and sheen, and overall appearance.
