Painter & Loader - Structural Steel
Our company is looking for an experienced Structural Steel material loader. The ideal candidate should be proficient in operating overhead cranes, and should understand the process of priming/painting steel.
Under the direct supervision of the Shop Manager, the employee will be responsible for painting, loading, and unloading structural steel components such as columns and beams onto or from trucks using overhead cranes, in addition to a variety of other tasks relating to the shipment of products. These items include but are not limited to:
- Operate overhead cranes, tractors, loaders and other equipment to transport materials to and from the paint bay and transportation vehicles, and to store and retrieve materials within shop and yard.
- Apply paint, or other finishes to steel, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers as required by job specifications.
- Must be able to wear a respirator for extended periods of time.
- Read and interpret work lists, written instructions and diagrams to perform task at hand.
- Wire brush and scrape as necessary to achieve proper surface texture per job specifications.
- Cover surfaces with drop-cloths or tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the painting and loading trade.
- Analyze painting specifications, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan painting and loading needs.
- Must be able to set up and climb ladders and stairs to work on flatbed trailers.
- Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment.
- Prepare all material surfaces to be painted, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
- Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.
- Check conditions of trailers to ensure cleanliness, safety and compliance with loading procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Reliable transportation and clean driving record
- Ability to speak, read and write in English
- Valid driver’s license
- Physically capable of lifting/pushing/pulling 70 pounds unassisted
- Physically capable of bending/twisting as well as standing for long periods of time
- Able to work well with minimal supervision as well as with other co-workers.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and follow specified procedures
- Self-motivated, detail oriented and has a positive attitude
- Willingness to work overtime as needed
- Must be willing to submit a drug test and background check
