Job summary

La Posada in Green Valley, AZ is seeking a painter to join our Remodel and Maintenance team. The role offers a Monday–Friday schedule with a guaranteed 40 hours per week and a supportive team focused on improving resident spaces.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 2 years of painting experience.
• Ability to read and follow work orders from supervisors.
• Knowledge of surface preparation and applying finishes.
• Adheres to safety guidelines for hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

• Prepare surfaces using primers, sealers, and fillers.
• Apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, or structures.
• Estimate material quantities based on surface measurements and work orders.
• Read and interpret work orders or instructions from supervisors.
• Set up ladders, scaffolding, or other access equipment for high work areas.
• Protect surfaces with masking tape, drop cloths, or coverings during painting.
• Remove old finishes by sanding, stripping, or other techniques.

Competencies

• Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
• Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
• Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.
• Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine work requirements.
• Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
• Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
• Erect scaffolding and swing gates, or set up ladders, to work above ground level.
• Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
• Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
• Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colors and consistencies.
• Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water and/or abrasive blasting.
• Select tools and finishes for surfaces to be covered, considering durability, ease of handling, methods of application, and customers' wishes.
• Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.
• Polish final coats to specified finishes.
• Waterproof buildings, using waterproofers and caulking.
• Cut stencils, and brush and spray lettering and decorations on surfaces.
• Spray or brush hot plastics or pitch onto surfaces.
• Applies paints, stains, surface preparatory materials, and undercoating materials to a variety of surfaces, as appropriate, according to Material Safety Data Sheets within established hazardous materials guidelines.
• Identifies, safely handles, and appropriately disposes of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.
• Participates in additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor, aligned with qualifications, and can be reasonably expected to be completed with minimal orientation.
