Job summary

NORDAM is seeking a Painter Assistant to prepare parts for primer and paint, assist in painting operations, and polish aluminum aircraft skins to achieve the specified finish. The role supports basic production procedures and works in a first-shift, aerospace environment.

Responsibilities include surface prep, sanding, masking, and applying sealants under supervision, following work orders, using PPE, and maintaining environmental and safety standards while learning on the job.

Job Summary

Applies knowledge of basic production procedures to prepare parts for the application of primer and paint, assist in painting operations and polishes and buffs aluminum aircraft skins and other metal products to achieve the specified end product finish.

Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities
  • Performs routine parts preparation and polishing operations and participates in developmental learning assignments. Applies standard solutions to problems or work situations of a routine or repetitive nature. May perform a variety of routine duties related to any paint preparation, paint application or final finish work operation of company and customer products.
  • Reads, learns and interprets specifications and work scope shown in writing on work orders. Determines proper method to complete work assignments. May be required to assemble or disassemble parts and assemblies to perform specified work operation.
  • Prepares parts for paint application by hand or machine sanding, filing, caulking, sealing and cleaning. Selects the appropriate personal protective equipment and performs the specified operation. Ensures respirator is working properly and is properly worn when using a respirator.
  • Polishes and buffs metals to remove scratches and other defects from metal surface. Uses hand held or stationary polishing equipment such as orbital sander, freestanding polish wheels and hand sanding to accomplish the work.
  • Selects polishing medium per work instructions such as sanding disks, emory paper, abrasive cake or lubricant. Holds part against polish wheel and/or moves polishing equipment over surfaces of workpiece to remove fine scratches and to achieve specified finish.
  • Performs minor filling operations related to the cosmetic appearance of the part being worked. Polishes recessed areas with fine grade emery cloth and performs masking operations, Assists and learns calculation of mix ratios in order to mix paint, sealant and other materials.
  • Ensures compliance with environmental regulations and maintains records in accordance with these environmental regulations. Performs hand and spray application of primer and topcoat to aircraft parts.

Performs other duties as required. These duties may include assignments in job classifications and departments other than the primary assignment.

year(s) Previous work experience in a manufacturing environment preferred, but not required.

Skills and Competencies

  • Must be able to use small hand tools and machinery.
  • Respirator training, certification and fit test. The fit must be to the skin at the respirator seal.
  • Pulmonary function test is required.
  • Jaeger color perception eye test.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to work in excess of eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week, if required. Additionally, those who work at NORDAM Repair Division must be able to ascend and descend stairs.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the Stakeholder is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can vary from loud to a more moderate level.

  • Follows standard written or oral instructions.
  • May need additional assistance for more complex tasks.
