Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Painter position for the University Housing and Dining Services at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

University Housing and Dining Services recognizes the importance of learning both in and out of the classroom, and supports the concept of education as an individual as well as a community experience. We strive to provide our students, faculty, staff, and guests with safe, economical, on-campus living and dining options that are convenient and comfortable. We offer a variety of living and dining options in fifteen residence halls, three dining centers, and a number of student family apartments.

The purpose of this position is to provide quality, courteous, and timely facilities maintenance services to all internal and external customers; to produce quality work at or above the industry standard; to perform skilled journey-level work in preparing and applying finishes such as paint and coatings to metal, wood, glass, plaster, drywall, masonry surfaces, and other various substrates of buildings and other structures, equipment, furniture, and woodwork in order to protect and beautify the surfaces, and to provide safe, secure, and sanitary living & dining facilities for students and staff living in University owned facilities. This position will work in both occupied and unoccupied facilities. This position will communicate timelines and scopes of projects, as well as regularly scheduled work. This position provides training and assistance to other staff in completing paint-related work and will provide direction and leadership to student staff, as needed.

Key Responsibilities

80% Maintenance and Repair of UHDS Paint Finishes:

Plan and organize paint projects, select materials, colors, additives, etc. Coordinate with other UHDS painters, UHDS Inventory and suppliers for the materials and equipment required. Prepare job sites for work. Clean, service and repair related equipment. Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by practicing UHDS department standards.

Preparing surfaces and areas for refinishing or original finishes. Cleaning surfaces of interior and exterior walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, cabinets, woodwork prior to coating. Filling cracks, plasterboard joints, holes, dents and pores to prepare for final finish. Caulking, waterproofing, and recoating roofs. Making simple repairs to furniture, woodwork and cabinets prior to starting refinishing work. Masking and protecting surfaces that will not get coatings. Applying appropriate primers to various substrates prior to painting in accordance with UHDS construction standards.

Maintain exterior and interior finishes using roller, brush, and spray equipment. Apply coating materials such as oil base and water base paints, varnish, lacquer, epoxy, sealers, under-coatings, and primers, by roller, brush, and/or sprayer.

Proactively audit UHDS spaces and develop work plans to ensure that spaces are meeting department standards. Work closely with Operations Manager to determine work prioritization based on resources and impact.

15% Support UHDS Project Work

Apply paint and other wall finishes in support of consolidated UHDS work parties, inhouse renovation and remodel projects, or perform other work as needed in support of the broader UHDS Facilities team workload. Assist with the construction of steel stud walls. Installing sheet rock, wall insulation, soundboards, taping and mudding, and applying texture from a texture machine. May include moving furnishings and fixtures to prepare site for work.

5% Lead Work

Provide training to other UHDS Facilities staff on proper use and application of coating materials. Work with other painters to maintain and manage paint storage and paint booth.

Makes hiring recommendations, trains and provides lead responsibilities for student employees in the Student Maintenance Program as they perform work in all of the UHDS Facilities and Administrative spaces. Provides training to Student Maintenance Program responsible for applying paint finishes.

Monitors work schedules for student workers. Ensures student hires do not exceed 40 hours per week during academic break periods and 24 hours per week when school is in session.

May train student workers to use the following equipment:

  • Pneumatic driven tools
  • Airless spray tools
  • Gasoline driven tools
  • Electric tools (e.g. sanders, saws, buffers, grinders, drills, hammers, etc.)
  • Hand tools

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You To Have

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate concepts, policies and procedures clearly and effectively.

Experience using spray equipment such as airless, high volume low pressure, air assisted airless, and pressure pots.

Experience working developing ongoing, regular maintenance and renewal schedules for finishes-related work.

Experience working with others to maintain shared spaces (such as a paint booth) and educate and training co-workers on proper application of coating materials.

Experience estimating paint and materials based on square footage.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Working schedule for this position is: M – F 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Shift and/or work assignment may be changed based on operational needs. We are a seven day a week operation so weekends and holiday work may be required.

Staff will be required to work in a variety of spaces that may have situational hazards, including by not limited to: restrooms, roofs, dining and food prep areas, ladders, attics, and mechanical rooms.

Ability to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions. Ability to stand, walk, and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations such as on roofs. Ability to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise.

This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be contacted by his/her supervisor (or Person In Charge) and required to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.

Employee must carry a radio while on the job.

Good attendance is crucial for stability and day-to-day business needs. Must follow attendance and break schedule, and must be on time when shift begins.

The employee in this position will often be required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
