Job Summary:

Austin Proper Hotel is seeking a skilled, dependable, and detail-oriented Full-Time Painter to join our Engineering Department. The ideal candidate will have experience in commercial painting, drywall repair, furniture refinishing, and cosmetic restoration, preferably within a full-service or luxury hotel environment.

This is a fast-paced, hands-on position requiring strong craftsmanship, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to maintain the hotel's aesthetic standards while minimizing disruption to guests and daily operations. The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering leadership, the in-house Carpenter, and hotel Operations teams to identify and address cosmetic deficiencies throughout the property.
We are seeking an individual who takes pride in their craftsmanship, demonstrates initiative, and understands the critical role the Engineering Department plays in the overall guest experience. The successful candidate will be proactive in identifying areas requiring cosmetic improvements and restoration, rather than waiting for maintenance requests to be submitted.
This individual should have a strong eye for detail, an appreciation for the hotel's architectural design and finishes, and the ability to execute repairs that blend seamlessly with existing materials. They will demonstrate accountability, efficiency, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering permanent, high-quality solutions.
Our expectation is simple: Take pride in every detail, deliver exceptional craftsmanship, communicate effectively, and help preserve the design, condition, and luxury standards of Austin Proper Hotel.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Painting & Surface Restoration:
    • Perform interior painting and touch-ups throughout guest rooms, public areas, restaurants, back- of-house spaces, and other hotel facilities.
    • Repair damaged drywall, including patching, taping and floating, sanding, priming, and painting.
    • Match existing paint colors, finishes, and textures to maintain consistency with the hotel's design intent.
    • Proactively prepare work areas before painting, including masking and protecting surrounding furniture and finishes.
    • Perform minor wall and ceiling restoration following plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other maintenance repairs.
    • Identify and address cosmetic deficiencies such as scratches, scuffs, peeling paint, damaged wall finishes, and deteriorating surfaces.
    • Maintain high-quality workmanship while minimizing guest disruption.
  • Tile, Grout & General Cosmetic Repairs:
    • Perform minor tile and grout repairs in guest rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and public areas.
    • Remove and replace damaged grout, caulking, and sealant where appropriate.
    • Repair or replace minor damaged wall and floor finishes within the scope of the position.
    • Identify areas showing cosmetic deterioration and recommend appropriate restoration methods.
    • Support minor general maintenance projects as needed.
  • Paint Shop Organization & Inventory Management:
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized painting workspace.
    • Monitor paint inventory, supplies, tools, and materials to ensure availability for daily maintenance and projects.
    • Maintain accurate records of paint colors, finish specifications, and approved materials used throughout the property.
    • Follow appropriate safety procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of painting materials and chemicals.
  • Communication & Teamwork:
    • Communicate professionally and effectively with guests, coworkers, vendors, and hotel leadership.
    • Work closely with Engineering, Carpentry, Housekeeping, Front Desk, Food & Beverage, and other operational departments.
    • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced hotel environment.
    • Provide accurate updates regarding project progress, material needs, and anticipated completion times.
    • Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate respect for guest privacy and hotel operations.
Education and/or Experience
  • Working knowledge of commercial painting techniques, surface preparation, and drywall repair.
  • Experience with taping and floating, sanding, priming, and painting.
  • Basic understanding of wood staining, furniture refinishing, and cosmetic restoration; familiarity with minor tile, grout, and caulking repairs.
  • Previous painting or restoration experience in a full-service or luxury hotel preferred.
  • Experience with commercial painting, furniture refinishing, and wall restoration preferred.
Skills/Specialized Knowledge
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and digital work-order systems.
  • Ability to safely use and maintain common painting and restoration tools.

  • Bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish a plus.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday; perform physically active, hands- on maintenance and restoration duties.
