Job summary

The New Jersey Judiciary invites applicants for paid internships across Civil, Criminal, Family, and IT divisions. Interns will perform clerical, administrative, and customer service duties, gain broad knowledge of the court system, and support proceedings while working flexible hours between 8:30 a.m.

and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Selected interns may assist with data entry, filing, scheduling, and researching caseloads.

Qualifications

  • Interns must meet credential requirements: thirty college credits for most internships.
  • Pre-Trial Services interns need thirty credit hours from an accredited college/university.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare filings for judge/staff review and provide documents to chambers.
  • Answer phones, return calls, receive and distribute voicemails.
  • Research caseloads and manage calendars.
  • Moderate virtual hearings and assist with client contacts for new cases.
  • Perform data entry and other clerical tasks.
  • Draft correspondence and memos; attend community planning meetings.
  • Follow up with treatment providers and defendants as needed.

SALARY: The hourly rate for this position is $20.00.

This position is limited to a maximum of 35 hours per week, not to exceed 944 hours in a fiscal year.

Interns would be required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.

The Union Vicinage is accepting resumes for paid internship opportunities for Winter 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027. The interns will perform a variety of clerical, administrative, supportive tasks, and customer service duties in connection with proceedings instituted before the Court. Interns may also assist with tasks, including but not limited to, data entry and lookups, filing, and making photocopies. The interns will gain a broad insight and knowledge of the court system. Flexible schedules are available. The selected candidates will treat all personnel, clients, and members of the public with dignity, courtesy, and respect.

Internships may be available for the following divisions: Civil, Criminal, Criminal Pre-Trial Services, Family, Ombudsman, and Operations, Probation and IT. Please specify in your cover letter which division you are interested in, as well as any alternatives, and note the semester(s) you are available for an internship opportunity. Hours and days are flexible but must be between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.

For Pre-Trial Services (PTS) interns: Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree or certificate in the Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related field.

All other interns: Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree.

Note: Unofficial College or University transcript must be included in your application in order to be considered.

Physical Ability: For some positions, applicants must have the ability to perform work which requires climbing and prolonged standing, stretching, bending and reaching. The selected candidate must be able to frequently lift and carry supplies weighing from 30 to 50 pounds and, occasionally, materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.

Special Note: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.

Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the “New Jersey First Act,” all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
