Job summary

Kaizen Lab Inc. is seeking a Pre/Post-Operative Staff Nurse for the PACU – Preop/Postop Areas. The RN will manage admission, pre-op education, and immediate post-op care, ensuring safe stabilization for home discharge or inpatient transfer.

The role requires one year of acute care experience, current nursing license, and ability to work within established protocols. Cardiac monitoring skills are preferred; overtime and on-call may be required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and current nursing license.
  • Minimum of one year experience in acute care.

Responsibilities

Job description

POSITION: Pre/Post-Operative Staff Nurse

DEPARTMENT: PACU – Preop/ Postop Areas ClinicalOperations

SUMMARY: ThePre/Post-operative RN is responsible for the patient’s admission to thefacility, comprehensive pre-operative care, immediate post-operative care, andstabilization for return to the home environment or to impatient setting.

I. POSITION DUTIES

A. Toutilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while givingdirect and indirect patient care.

1. Responsiblefor patient’s admission and pre-operative care; holistic preparation forsurgery, considering all needs, including pre-operative education,escort/family members, psychosocial needs, utilizing preference cards, andacting under established protocols, practices, and standing orders.

2. Coordinatespre-operative lab work required for individual patients, documenting andreporting pertinent results.

3. Responsiblefor the patient’s post-operative care and stabilization; holistic preparationfor returning to the home environment or to inpatient setting, considering allneeds, including post-discharge care, escort/family members, educational andpsychosocial needs, utilizing preference cards and acting under establishedprotocols, practices, and standing orders.

4. Performsthorough and accurate continual patient assessment, anticipating potentialproblems and reporting pertinent assessments to the anesthesiologist,supervisor, and/or surgeon appropriately.

5. Documentsactions in medical record completely and accurately in a timely manner.

6. Keepssafety of patient, self, and others a primary concern always; actsappropriately in an emergency situation.

7. Actsas discharge nurse when assigned, giving holistic and thorough dischargeeducation.

8. Demonstratesgood nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions, including cardiacmonitoring.

9. Supervisesand directs, as delegated, the activities of non-professional personnel.

10. Utilizesequipment and supplies effectively and efficiently, assisting with stocking,replenishing, and preparation of supplies.

11. Performsother related duties as assigned by supervisors.

B. Tofunction effectively as a member of the care team.

1. Participatesas a team member in planning and implementation of patient care; takesresponsibility for an adequate patient load, reviews schedule for next day withpreference cards.

2. Reportsfor work in a timely manner and maintains a good attendance record.

3. Showsflexibility in accommodating schedule changes, i.e. working late or early,changing workdays, etc.

4. Utilizestime effectively.

5. Organizeswork effectively and appropriately to finish in a timely manner anddemonstrates the ability to produce results.

6. Demonstratesthe ability to deal with other team members.

7. Monitorssurgery schedule continually, communicating arrivals, cancellations, delays;communicates with reception desk, contacts patients or surgeons who are late.

8. Demonstratesinterest and enthusiasm towards work.

9. Contributesto increased morale and positive attitude in the department and facility.

10. Demonstratesthe ability to accept change.

11. Requiresminimal supervision in daily tasks.

12. Reportspertinent information to Chief Nursing Officer and/or Nurse Manager.

C. Tosupport quality activities.

1. Participatesin on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.

2. Makespost-operative phone calls, assessing patient status and reporting anypertinent information to supervisor and/or anesthesiologist.

3. Utilizescritical thinking and problem-solving skills, making suggestions forimprovement.

4. Performsand documents daily assignments, including general housekeeping and maintenanceof work environment.

5. Developscommunication skills and promotes inter-departmental relationships to ensurecontinuity of care.

6. Maintainscurrent CPR certification, and ACLS.

IV. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

It is necessary to do some overtimebeyond regularly scheduled work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, on-call duty may berequired. Because of the nature ofpatient care and the pace in the pre/post-operative care unit, this job can bestressful and hectic.

V. POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Physical and mental – requiresextensive mobility, waling, and standing.90% of time spent pushing, pulling, lifting equipment, lifting, turning,and assisting patients. Potential existsfor exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardousmaterials. Personal protective equipmentshould be utilized as needed. Must be able to analyze, problem solve, and makedecisions quickly and calmly. Employee must be able to work independently aswell as within a team. Employee musthave thorough knowledge of nursing theory and excellent patient assessmentskills. Employee must present professional image. Must be willing to take responsibility andmaintain accountability. Employee mustpossess good organizational and excellent communication skills as well asflexibility. Must have ability toprioritize and handle periods of stress.Requires respect for the confidential nature of the work environment.

VI. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

The Pre/Post-operative Staff Nurse mustbe a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, and be currently licensed topractice nursing. A minimum of one year experience in acute care isrequired. Cardiac monitored nursing carepreferred. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independentlyas well as function within a team; have the ability to assess patient needs,determine priorities, plan and direct pre/post-operative care of the patient;present good public relation skills; and possess the ability to handle stress.
