Job summary

RRD is seeking a seasoned packaging designer to lead the design phase of packaging and display projects, from objectives to production. You will create visual solutions, prototypes, and technical drawings that meet cost and manufacturing considerations.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years in packaging design, strong communication, and collaboration skills. Proficiency in AutoCAD, QuarkXPress, Freehand, Photoshop, and Illustrator is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in discipline related to functional work or role with 5+ years of relevant work experience in packaging design.
  • Must be able consistently identify critical elements, variables and alternatives to develop solutions.
  • Must be able to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.
  • Able to communicate clearly and courteously with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems.
  • Able to apply excellent business acumen and collaborative skills when resolving problems.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in and leads the design phase of packaging and display projects from objectives to production.
  • Translates customer input into creative structural design solutions balancing visual appeal, integrity, and manufacturability.
  • Designs visual communication in various formats and materials including prototypes, mock-ups, drawings, renderings, and assembly instructions.
  • Prepares finished digital art with color and high-resolution images/files.
  • Manages and disseminates information, prototypes, and files throughout design to production and placement.
  • Coordinates with outside agencies, art services, printers for project completion.

Job Description

Participates in and leads the design phase of a packaging and display projects beginning with analysis of the objectives, creative structural design and engineering of working prototypes, and on into production while meeting all manufacturing criteria and customer expectations. Provides visual solutions for packaging, advertising, and sales support needs by creating designs and copy layouts.

  • Assesses information provided by the customer, Sales Department, and Project Manager and translates it into creative structural design solutions, considering visual and structural integrity and cost effective manufacturability and assembly.
  • Researches existing products, ideas, and patents from all media.
  • Obtains approval of concept by submitting ideas to team for approval and critique.
  • Designs and produces visual communication in a variety of formats and materials, including structural prototypes of packaging, product mock-ups, three-dimensional drawings, photographs, illustrative renderings, technical drawings, and assembly instructions.
  • Prepares finished digital art by color and digital high-resolution images and files.
  • Manages and disseminates information, prototypes, and electronic files through the entire design process into production, assembly, and placement.
  • Completes projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc.
  • Enhances existing concepts or designs.
  • Works on patenting new products and patent searches.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Able to apply excellent functional computer knowledge in utilizing Microsoft Windows, MAC, or other technical tools in completing assignments.
  • Able to apply expertise in all the tools or applications used to complete work assignments.
  • Able to mentor junior level team members in the use of tools and/or systems in the position.
  • Requires excellent communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.
  • Must be able to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted.
  • Requires strong understanding of the impact of a message on the organization or customer.
  • Very good knowledge of prepress production, manufacturing equipment, processes, and capabilities.
  • Must be proficient in packaging software including AutoCAD, Quark Express, Freehand, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as very good knowledge of prototyping equipment.
Additional Information

RRD's current salary range for this role is $85,000 to $136,000 / year. The salary range may be adjusted based on the applicable geographic location of the hired employee, and the range may change in the future. At RRD, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. Depending on the role, in addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program.
