Job summary

Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. is seeking a Packaging Operator to support production, quality, and inventory by ensuring our product is packaged to specifications.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ experience in food processing.
  • 1 year Operator level experience in food processing.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • GMP knowledge and food safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the packaging equipment and adjust tolerances as needed.
  • Observe the packaging line flow and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare equipment for the specific package size based on orders.
  • Identify packaging defects and adjust accordingly.
  • Verify all packages for dates, codes, weights and cut lines.
  • Perform film changes and keep the line running smoothly.
  • Verify staged materials for production at start/end of shift.
  • Perform basic math and data entry accurately.
  • Operate and maintain box erectors.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and inefficiencies.
  • Submit daily shift paperwork accurately.
  • Provide status updates to Production Supervisor on efficiency and downtime.
  • Oversee packaging quality with final checks in mind.
  • Perform cleaning on processing and packaging equipment.
  • Document all cleaning activities.
  • Follow GMPs and food safety standards.

POSITION SUMMARY

Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. (OSF) is seeking a Packaging Operator to assist in production, quality, and inventory by ensuring our product is packaged to specifications. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the bagging and packaging equipment to its highest capabilities by meeting or exceeding production line standards and will actively participate in workplace safety.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand the packaging equipment being used and how to adjust tolerances as necessary
  • Observe the flow of the packaging line and identify any areas of improvement
  • Understand and prepare equipment for the specific package size to be used based on orders
  • Identify packaging defects and make necessary adjustments immediately
  • Verify all packages for correct dates, codes, weights and cut lines
  • Perform film changeovers efficiently and ensure that the production line continues to run smoothly with no unnecessary delays
  • Verify staged materials for production run at the beginning and end of shift
  • Perform basic math and data entry
  • Operate and maintain the box erectors
  • Troubleshoot equipment failure and inefficiencies
  • Complete daily paperwork accurately and submit at the end of each shift
  • Communicate routinely with Production Supervisor providing status updates on efficiency, downtime including any pending issues or concerns
  • Participate in overseeing the quality of the products packaged with final check point in mind
  • Perform cleaning activities as necessary on processing and packaging equipment
  • Accurately document all cleaning activities
  • Follow all food safety and food quality standards, regulations, and laws
  • Remain current with training expectations
  • Support for all positions on the packaging line as needed
  • Follow safety and security rules and precautions
  • Demonstrate a daily commitment to continuous improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Manager or Production Supervisor

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience in food processing
  • 1 year Operator level experience in food processing

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. safely
  • Standing for long periods of time, frequent twisting and bending, use of both hands, manual & finger dexterity for rolling/manipulating
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Being in cold, wet, and damp climates of 33°F-38°F for long periods of time
  • Exposure to loud noises
  • The use of safety equipment when operating machinery that may include protective clothing, safety glasses, hearing protectors, and safety shoes
  • Repetitive motions

GMP & FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires compliance with all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and food safety policies. Employees must follow all sanitation, hygiene, and PPE requirements. Visible body piercings, jewelry, and any other prohibited personal items are not allowed on the production floor to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance.
