The purpose of being a Swim Instructor is to teach people how to be safe in, on and or around water and to teach people of all ages and varying abilities how to swim. Using a logical progression, the instructor will cover the knowledge and skills needed for aquatic skill development, which in turn, leads to a safer and better swimmer. This position is responsible for planning, organizing and providing quality swimming and water safety instruction.

Responsibilities:

  1. Attend Frances Meadows Swim Instructor Training sessions and in services.
  2. Instruct and conduct swimming and safety programs as assigned.
  3. Completion and submission of required forms, lesson plans and certificates in a timely manner.
  4. Interact positively and effectively with participants and their families.
  5. Be familiar with basic swim mechanics of all four strokes and be able to perform them proficiently.
  6. Adapt teaching approaches to the ages, experiences, and abilities of participants.
  7. Provide for the health and safety of participants, ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards.
  8. Cover all material required by the Frances Meadows Fantastic Five swim lesson program.
  9. Communicate regularly with participants and their parents about progress.
  10. Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in accordance with the facility's emergency action plans.
  11. Enforce all aquatics facility policies, rules and regulations.
  12. Complete records and reports in a timely fashion.
  13. Participate in regular in-service trainings.
  14. Complete lesson plans, to be reviewed by the Head WSI on the Friday prior to the start of swim lessons.
  15. NEVER LEAVE PARTICIPANTS UNATTENDED IN OR AROUND THE POOL.
  16. Instruct all lessons in the water.
  17. Other duties, as assigned, by the Head WSI or higher authority.
  18. Adhere to and enforce all Gainesville Parks & Recreation Agency policies and procedures.
  19. Represent the Gainesville Parks & Recreation Agency and the Aquatic facilities in a positive, professional manner.
  20. Have knowledge of all Aquatic programs and schedules.

Knowledge Required:

  • The swim lesson function and swim strokes (Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Freestyle and turns.)
  • Water environmental conditions.
  • Water Rescue techniques from Swim Safety for Swim Coaching and Basic Water Rescue classes.
  • Facilities policies and pool/facility rules.
  • Emergency Action Plan for the assigned facility.

Education and Experience:

No experience required.

Licenses and Certifications:

Be a Red Cross certified Lifeguard or hold Red Cross CPR certification.

Criteria for Success:

  • Emphasis on water safety and drowning prevention.
  • Optimizing swim skills for participant success.
  • Foreseeing hazards and taking preventive steps.
  • Ensuring lifeguards are on duty during swim lessons.
  • Using course materials and training equipment safely.
  • Informing participants and parents about evaluation procedures and course requirements.
  • Enforcing pool policies while providing excellent customer service.
  • Displaying a positive attitude for all participants and GPRA staff.
  • Arriving prepared and on time for work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to demonstrate all swimming strokes.
  • Ability to communicate with children.
  • Ability to lift children in the Swim Lesson Program.
  • Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the working day.
  • Ability to see clearly.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive. Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
