Job summary

City of Charlottesville seeks a General Maintenance Worker to perform routine maintenance, repair, and cleaning of buildings in city parks, facilities, schools, and Downtown Mall. Work is supervised by a Parks & Recreation General Maintenance Supervisor.

The role includes hands-on tasks, operation of city vehicles, safety adherence, and potential weekend or after-hours shifts to serve the public effectively.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED and related maintenance experience.
• At least 2 years of experience in building or general maintenance.
• Equivalency of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Maintain recreation facilities, including installing light bulbs, timers, wiring pumps, painting signs, buildings, bathrooms, and related tasks.
• Operate city vehicle and maintenance equipment; use hand tools and power tools for routine maintenance and construction.
• Complete work per maintenance standards; report issues to supervisor; follow safety procedures.
• May assist in debris and/or snow removal and be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, or during emergencies.
• Attend to maintenance tasks while ensuring regular attendance and reliable performance.

The Parks & Recreation General Maintenance Worker performs responsible routine work in the maintenance, repair, and cleaning of buildings in city parks, recreational facilities, schools and/or the Downtown Mall. Work is performed under the general supervision of a P&R General Maintenance Supervisor.

The hiring amount for this position is between $19.51 to $23.97 ($40,580.80 - $49,857.60 annually).

As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

• The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. • Maintains recreation facilities by performing a variety of activities, including but not limited to:
  • installing light bulbs, timers, and wiring pumps
  • painting signs, buildings inside and out, and bathrooms
  • installing pumps and fixing water lines, toilets, and sinks
  • concrete pad pouring, and brick installations and removal
  • assist in getting pools operating
  • some framing and bridge building and maintenance
• Operates city vehicle in the performance of duties; operates and maintains equipment, hand tools, and power tools engaged in routine maintenance and construction projects.
• Completes all work according to maintenance standards and ensures proper care in the use and upkeep of equipment assigned, reporting issues and needs to supervisor.
• Follows safety regulations and standard procedures, adhering to checklists and following detailed instructions for task completion.
• Solves simple problems and actively seeks guidance when appropriate.
• May assist in debris and/or snow removal when necessary.
• May be required to work weekends, nights, holidays or to be called back to work in weather or non-weather emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public.
• Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
• Regular and reliable attendance.

Other Duties

• Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or GED AND some related experience in building or general maintenance.
• At least 2 years of experience in building or general maintenance.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements

• Obtain VDOT Flagger Certification within one year of hire.
• Must obtain and maintain a Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
• Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug screen.

Preferred

• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

• General knowledge of the maintenance, repair, construction, and manual tasks of the area assigned.
• General knowledge of the use of common hand tools and specialized power tools required in the work.

Work Environment

• Work is performed inside and outside where there may be exposure to vibrations, moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens, electrical hazards, inadequate lighting, confined spaces, uneven terrain, fumes/airborne particles and fuels.
• The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
• The noise level is usually loud to intense.
