Job summary

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada, Inc. seeks an Overnight Shelter Support Staff to work 10:00 pm - 6:30 am at the X Street Navigation Center in Sacramento.

Responsibilities include ensuring safety, assisting residents, and maintaining records in a 100-bed shelter operated in partnership with the City of Sacramento. The role requires CPR/First Aid training, crisis de-escalation skills, teamwork, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Teamwork and collaboration with staff and residents.
• Excellent oral and written communication for case notes and reports.
• Ability to de-escalate crisis situations and provide safe, compassionate care.
• Strong organizational skills to manage daily shelter operations and duties.
• Analytical and decision-making abilities for safety and program integrity.

Responsibilities

• Explain program rules and regulations to residents and ensure observance.
• Coordinate meal prep, bed assignments, showers, laundry, and daily routines.
• Provide awake shift coverage and maintain ground security; perform hourly safety checks.
• De-escalate crises and respond to emergencies; provide assistance as needed.
• Maintain daily reports and respond to residents’ questions and concerns.
• Perform clerical duties and maintain clear communication with residents.
