Job summary

Just Compassion of East Washington County is seeking a Shelter Support teammate for our 50-unit family shelter in Gresham, Oregon. This role assists with meal preparation, guest support, and coordinating with case management to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

The position requires empathy, strong teamwork, and a trauma-informed, housing-first approach to service, with a focus on respectful, participant-centered care and reliable shift coverage.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of experience in human services, hospitality, shelter operations, or a related field.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse populations.
• Basic cooking, cleaning, organizational and facility support skills.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to trauma-informed care, harm reduction and housing-first practices.
• Knowledge of homelessness or housing support systems.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct assistance and support to families and individuals with empathy and respect.
• Assist with meal service, hygiene items, laundry, and shelter supplies.
• Orient participants to shelter routines and available services.
• Report concerns to supervisor or case manager as appropriate.
• Prepare and serve meals according to schedules and safety standards.
• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, dining, and food storage areas.
• Assist with inventory and restocking of supplies.
• Support volunteer meal service and community partner coordination as needed.
• Clean and upkeep communal spaces and assist with event setup.
• Document daily logs, shift notes, and program data as required.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to agency policies.
• Support HMIS data collection and reporting as assigned.
• Apply trauma-informed care and housing-first principles in all interactions.
• Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
