Job summary

University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory seeks an entry-level Research Engineering Optical Fabrication Technician I for the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab. The role supports mirror grinding and polishing operations and involves working 9:00 PM–9:00 AM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in a federally funded contract.

Candidates should be ready to operate LOG/LPM equipment, assemble optical components, and document measurements while adhering to safety and lab procedures. U.S.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalency required.
• Requires weekend night shift work, Thursday through Saturday, 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM.
• This position is for a federal contract which requires that the selected candidate be a U.S. citizen.

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and maintain optical fabrication equipment (LOG and LPM) under supervision.
• Assemble, align, and test optical components and systems according to specs.
• Troubleshoot optical setups and implement corrective actions to ensure reliability.
• Move and handle mirrors with an air cart near fixed obstacles.
• Collect measurements and data to evaluate mirror conformance using HREP, SCOTS, Test Plate, Laser Tracker.
• Maintain records of runs, parameters, and results in logs and reports.
• Learn and apply lab safety procedures and processes related to optical fabrication.
