Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Western Territory in Tucson is seeking a Part-Time Overnight Shelter Worker for Tucson Hospitality House. The role involves managing intake, assisting guests, monitoring safety, and maintaining accurate records, including HMIS entries.

You will work Friday and Saturday nights from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am, with a focus on respectful service to a diverse client base. Qualifications include experience with homeless populations, ability to handle crises, First Aid/CPR/AED

Qualifications

  • Ability to handle crisis/emergency situations or services for the homeless; utilize crisis intervention, crowd management and conflict resolution.
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED required (must be current or obtain).
  • Ability to assess at-risk participants and situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successful background clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage general operations of the Intake area and guest needs, referrals, medication, luggage access.
  • Work independently overnight with documentation checked against surveillance footage.
  • Monitor and supervise clients; report activity/incidents to emergency responders as needed.
  • Maintain visible presence to deter mischief and ensure safety.
  • Prepare accurate written communications in the Incident Report Logbook for management review.
  • Gather stats from sign-ups, laundry, church, and client registration; enter into HMIS.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls.
  • Conduct breath analysis testing to determine housing eligibility based on BAC results.
  • Manage morning exit procedures, including baggage, phones, meds, weapons, and belongings.
  • Perform required facility checks and ensure doors/windows/gates are secure.
  • Monitor facility cameras between rounds.
  • Use radio procedures with staff on duty.
  • Provide guests with required forms and hygiene items when needed.
  • Review shelter rules and policies with guests as necessary.
  • Take precautions to prevent property damage; coordinate with other agencies as needed.
  • Maintain safety and security of clients and staff; monitor access.
  • Enforce all house rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure distribution box stays supplied.
  • Contact Program Manager during emergencies per chain of command.
  • Attend staff meetings and relevant trainings.

Responsibilities
  • Manage general operations of the Intake area and guest needs staying in-house, providing information and referrals, medication, and access to luggage and items checked in
  • Position will work independently with minimal direct supervision during overnight hours. Because of this, excellent documentation will be required and checked against surveillance footage randomly
  • Monitor and supervise clients, investigate and report activity and incidents appropriately, or as needed to emergency responders, such as police, fire and/or ambulance personnel, according to established guidelines
  • Always maintain a visible presence in the facility to deter criminal mischief
  • Provide accurate and thorough written communication in the (IR) Incident Report Logbook for management and other staff review
  • Gather statistical information from participant sign-up sheets, laundry, church, and client registration and enter into HMIS, as well as other various services provided to clients during all stays
  • Answer incoming telephone calls
  • Conduct breath analysis testing on all guests entering shelter and any suspected to be intoxicated, using a Breathalyzer device, determining eligibility to receive housing based on the results of BAC level
  • Manage exit of clients in the morning, using proper sign-out procedures, to include baggage check out, cell phones, medication, weapons, and any other items checked in upon arrival
  • Implement a minimum of 4 regular facility, dorm, and restroom checks, including 1 exterior perimeter check documenting times and any activity, ensuring doors, windows, and gates are secure
  • Monitor facility camera system between scheduled rounds
  • Use proper radio procedures in conjunction with partnering staff on duty
  • Provide guests with requested forms
  • Provide hygiene items, i.e., shampoo, razors, body wash, towels, as needed
  • Review shelter rules and policies and procedures with guests as necessary or when questions arise
  • Take necessary precautions with clients to prevent damage to the facility
  • Interact with other agencies providing guidance and direction for special circumstances of guests, arriving by police escort, or released from the hospital
  • Maintain safety and security of clients and staff, monitoring front doors, allowing access only to authorized persons
  • Enforce all house rules, regulations, and policies
  • Ensure blanket distribution box stays supplied outside
  • Contact Program Manager when there is an emergency, following the chain of command contact list in the manager's absence
  • Attend all staff meetings and relevant training seminars as directed
