MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking an Overdose Survivor Coach to join the SBIRT team and engage overdose survivors after discharge from the emergency department.

The role involves conducting outreach, screenings, and connecting patients with recovery supports, using motivational interviewing to promote behavior change and linkage to services, including transportation and peer support after discharge.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • 1-2 years actively in recovery with a minimum of two years in a substance use disorder setting providing peer support/navigation is required.
  • Certified peer specialist through the DC DBH or recovery coach required or
  • Recovery coach certification required or
  • Driver's License - Endorsement P (Passenger) required and valid transportation.
  • CPRS certification preferred or attained within 180 days.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts street outreach to locate and engage patients referred from hospital EDs.
  • Assesses patient history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, and recovery needs.
  • Uses motivational interviewing to support changes and plan reduction or elimination of use.
  • Helps patients set personal recovery goals.
  • Identifies community supports and treatment services to promote recovery.

About the Job

MedStar Health is looking for an Overdose Survivor Coach to join our team at our Georgetown University Hospital!

The Overdose Survivor's Outreach Program (OSOP) Community Recovery Coach is an integral part of the SBIRT team that is designated to conduct outreach and engagement to survivors of an opioid overdose after discharge and referral from the emergency department. Provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery and reducing the risk associated with a subsequent overdose. Assists in completing referrals to recovery support and substance use treatment services as well as develops service plans to promote successful linkage to referred services. These functions are performed in accordance all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts street outreach to locate and engage with patients referred from hospital emergency departments.
  • Conducts screenings to understand the patient's history of drug and/or alcohol use treatment history social service and other recovery support needs and motivation to change behavior.
  • Facilitates patient's readiness for change and uses motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support and encourage the patient to plan for reduction or elimination of drug and alcohol use.
  • Assists patients in setting personal recovery goals.
  • Works with healthcare team and patient to identify community supports and treatment services to promote recovery.
  • Supports patients and families to understand how to access community resources.
  • Assists patients in linking to community supports and treatment services including helping secure transportation and other resources.
  • Acts as a peer support after patient is discharged from the hospital. This involves face-to-face and phone engagement with patients in various community settings.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 1-2 years actively in recovery with a minimum of two years of professional experience in a substance use disorder setting providing peer support/navigation required or
  • Certified peer specialist through the dc department of behavioral health or recovery coach required or
  • Recovery coach required
  • Drivers License - Endorsement P (Passenger) Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. required and
  • Cert Peer Recovery Specialist - CPRS Peer Recovery certification preferred or
  • attained within 180 Days required

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
