Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of phlebotomy experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collect urine, blood, and other specimens from patients.
  • Identify patients and follow collection procedures.
  • Enter outpatient orders into Laboratory Information System.
  • Register patients with demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data in LIS.
  • Process and prepare specimens for testing while maintaining sample integrity.
  • Facilitate drug screens according to protocol.
  • Order phlebotomy supplies as needed.
  • Package and ship specimens to reference laboratories.
  • Maintain neat, clean patient/work areas and adhere to HIPAA/OSHA standards.
  • Provide compassionate customer service to patients and staff.

Description

Supervision: This position receives direction and supervision from department coordinator/supervisor, department manager and director of operations.

Schedule: M-F 8:00am-1:00pm

A Specimen Processor/Phlebotomist demonstrates the ability to perform phlebotomy, and a variety of technical and clerical functions based on the needs of the individual client. Position handles blood, urine and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

Essential Functions
  • Facilitate the collection, processing and shipping of urine specimens and collect urine, blood, and other specimens from patients
  • Properly identify patients and follow procedures for collection of specimens.
  • Enter outpatient orders into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Register patients, recording demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Process and prepare specimens, maintaining proper specimen identification and sample integrity for testing in various laboratory sections.
  • Facilitate drug screens according to protocol.
  • Assess and order phlebotomy supplies.
  • Handle, package, and ship special cases to reference laboratories.
  • Process all laboratory specimens, centrifuge samples, and prepare samples for transport to appropriate departments for testing.
  • Separate and create manifests for main campus and reference laboratory testing.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
  • Follow universal precautions and all OSHA standards when handling specimens
  • Strictly adhere to HIPAA guidelines
  • Maintain neat, clean, orderly patient/work areas
  • Demonstrate customer service and compassion when interacting with patients, physicians, and facility staff. Work cooperatively with others and address customer service needs.
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a phlebotomist required (Phlebotomy certification required upon hire or within 6 months of hire)
  • Prior experience in a customer service or patient care environment.
  • Must have previous experience in a laboratory (clinical) setting.
Working Conditions
  • Comfortable handling biological specimens (including wearing PPE, personal protective equipment).
  • Ability to accurately identify specimens and knowledge and training of HIPPA.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Strong data entry and organizational skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite.
