Department: Health System Shared Services | MIM CDI and Coding
Coding services assign diagnosis and procedural codes to outpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection for OSU Health System. ICD-10-CM diagnosis and CPT-4 procedure codes are applied to all outpatients treated within the system that are not captured through the charge description master. The position involves training medical record coding specialists and coding various records such as emergency, ambulatory surgery, outpatient clinics, pain blocks, and ancillary areas. The Lead Coding Specialist also participates in the hospital’s trauma registry.
This role involves training and supporting new coding specialists, auditing coding accuracy, ensuring coding policies are followed, maintaining data integrity, and coding medical records at the end of patient visits. Responsibilities include selecting appropriate diagnoses and procedures, assigning accurate codes, and abstracting relevant information. The position requires reviewing information in the electronic medical record system, IHIS, and interfacing coded data with the billing system. The Lead may also cover areas in the absence of a manager and must maintain productivity and quality standards, as well as a consistent work schedule and weekly volume logs.
