Responsibilities

The RN Procedural Periop is responsible for providing high-quality, skilled nursing services to assist patients in achieving optimal health, functional health status, and safe passage during invasive or interventional procedures across episodic or series of visits. All patients have unique needs that range from health to illness, with more compromised patients requiring more complex care. The nurse's practice is driven by patient and family needs, requiring proficiency in multiple nursing dimensions. The RN Procedural Periop may need technical expertise in perioperative, PACU, and procedural areas to support patient care during interventions and procedures.

The goal is to utilize the nursing process to support patients in achieving an optimal level of wellness, defined by the patient. Through assessment, triage, education, collaboration, and coordination of healthcare and community resources, the RN Procedural Periop helps patients attain functional health and safe procedural experiences. They assist patients, families, staff, and systems in achieving high-quality, evidence-based, cost-effective, and patient-centered outcomes.

Core Nursing Practice Domains
  • Clinical Judgment: Incorporates reasoning, decision-making, critical thinking, and evidence-based guidelines, integrating formal and informal knowledge.
  • Duties may include: Pre-procedure assessments for moderate sedation, intra-procedure monitoring, appropriate intervention, post-procedure recovery, cross-training in areas like admission, discharge, IV insertion, and providing pre/post procedure education and follow-up calls.

All clinical duties adhere to AORN and ASPAN guidelines.

  • Clinical Inquiry: Engages in questioning and evaluating practice, implementing practice changes through research and experiential learning, and participating in quality and safety improvement teams.
  • Caring Practices: Demonstrates behaviors that foster a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment, promoting comfort and healing, aligned with Swanson’s Caring Theory.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers to achieve shared goals, involving interdisciplinary and community collaboration.
  • Advocacy and Moral Agency: Acts on behalf of patients, representing their concerns and addressing ethical and clinical issues.
  • Response to Diversity: Recognizes and incorporates cultural, spiritual, gender, racial, socioeconomic, age, and value differences into care, embracing organizational respect for diversity.
  • Facilitation of Learning: Facilitates learning for patients, families, staff, and community through formal and informal education.
  • Systems Thinking: Uses knowledge and tools to ensure safe patient transitions between care settings, demonstrating leadership in navigating systems and resources.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing school approved by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Washington RN licensure.
  • CPR certification (renewed every two years).
  • ACLS certification.
  • PALS certification (depending on location).
  • Completion of a related residency program with at least 2 years of experience in areas like OR or PACU.
  • Preferred: Minimum 1 year experience in GI specialty and certifications in related care areas.
  • Strong assessment skills, teamwork ability, and proficiency with electronic medical records.
