Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a skilled Medical Coder to assign ICD-CM and CPT codes for outpatient and inpatient services. You will review records, ensure documentation supports codes, and maintain high accuracy to optimize reimbursement.

We expect strong knowledge of coding systems, payer rules, and a commitment to continuing education. This on-site role offers a competitive non-exempt salary range with potential signing bonus eligibility.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of ICD-CM (current edition) and CPT coding systems and edits.
• Understanding of payer requirements and federal/state regulations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; professional demeanor.
• Detail oriented with strong organization and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to work independently within guidelines and meet productivity benchmarks.
• Experience in medical coding and billing processes is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to determine correct ICD-CM and CPT codes.
• Verify documentation supports codes and ensure accuracy.
• Assist in resolving missing or incomplete chart documentation.
• Participate in coding audits and performance improvement programs.
• Maintain coding accuracy and departmental productivity standards.
• Attend training and stay current with coding guidelines.
• Collaborate with clinical staff on coding practices and documentation.
• Notify manager of backlogs or documentation issues.
• Escalate unusual coding situations for guidance.
• Adhere to AHA, AMA, CMS coding and billing regulations.
• Maintain ongoing communication with coding colleagues for efficiency.
• Keep current with all coding updates and reference materials.
