Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to interpret clinical documentation and assign ICD-CM and CPT codes for outpatient and professional services. You will verify documentation, support accurate billing, and participate in audits and training to stay current with regulations.

The role requires strong coding knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently within established guidelines.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Medical coding certification preferred.
• Training in medical terminology with certification within 1 year of hire (AHIMA/AAPC recognized).
• CCS or CCS-P certification preferred.
• Knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT coding systems and CPT edits.
• Knowledge of third-party payer requirements and CMS guidelines.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills; professional conduct.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently within established guidelines.
• Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks to meet benchmarks.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical records to assign ICD-CM and CPT codes and modifiers.
• Verify documentation supports assigned codes.
• Assist in resolving missing chart documentation for coding and billing.
• Participate in the coding audit and performance program.
• Maintain coding accuracy rate and productivity per policy.
• Attend required training and coding in-services each year.
• Participate in improvement efforts and training for staff.
• Inform Manager of backlog or missing/incorrect documents.
• Refer unusual cases to the Manager for review.
• Alert management to coding irregularities or policy breaches.
• Adhere to AHA/AMA/CMS coding and billing regulations.
• Collaborate with coding personnel to maximize efficiency.
• Keep current with coding updates and guidelines.
