Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to assign and review ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, HCPCS codes and modifiers for E/M services, procedures, and tests across all settings for billing, research, and regulatory reporting.

You will review documentation, resolve charge edits, and support physicians with coding questions, while mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with NCCI guidelines and payer requirements.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience: Three years of coding/clinical experience.
• Licensure: CPC or CCS-P to qualify for all functional areas.

Responsibilities

• Reviews documentation to assign ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, HCPCS and modifiers for billing and research.
• Resolves charge review edits and follow-up work queues; identifies opportunities to improve accuracy.
• Mentors Coding Quality Specialist staff and assists physicians with coding questions.
• Ensures services meet NCCI, payer guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Trains and supports staff; provides peer review as directed by leadership.
