Job summary

The YMCA of Montclair is seeking a Regular Part-Time Youth Program Counselor to supervise teens and oversee positive youth activities at our Outdoor Education Center in Montclair, NJ. The role emphasizes safety, program delivery, and engagement with participants and families.

The ideal candidate has experience in recreation or education, strong communication skills, and a commitment to YMCA core values. Outdoor work along trails and active supervision are essential aspects of the position.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age and/or be a high school graduate.
• Previous experience in recreation, teaching, childcare or physical education preferred.
• Knowledge of crafts, group games and sports.
• Excellent human relations skills, good organizational and communication skills.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, families, and communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibilities are essential.
• The satisfactory performance of the incumbent will result in a consistently high-quality summer camp program which ensures the health and safety of all campers.
• Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and health of all youth and teens through proper supervision.
• Implement activities as directed.
• Work in an outdoor camp environment.
• Communicate positively with participants, parents, staff, and volunteers.
• Report accidents and incidents involving participants or staff.
• Demonstrate YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
• Cooperate with supervisors and staff to ensure smooth program operations.
• Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and follow procedures.
