City of Virginia Beach seeks a Recreation Specialist I – Part Time to develop and lead nature-based outdoor programs for all ages, including kayaking and archery, with emphasis on safety and inclusivity.

Ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s in recreation or related field or equivalent experience, plus a valid driver’s license and willingness to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends. Training provided; benefits include health plans and holidays.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor education or related field or four years of related experience.
• Experience in outdoor or nature-based programming for youth and adults.
• Knowledge of outdoor education techniques and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities

• Lead nature-based outdoor programs, classes and events for all ages.
• Design activities including kayaking, archery, nature camps and environmental education.
• Ensure activities are inclusive, safe and engaging; communicate concepts clearly.
• Maintain attendance, incident reports and evaluations; prepare program reports.
• Manage equipment, inventory and logistics for programs and events.
• Provide supervision for part-time staff, volunteers and interns.
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond to citizen inquiries.
• Use MS Office and registration software in daily tasks; travel between sites.
