Overview

Outdoor Program, Adventure Program Trip Leader – part of the Outdoor Program team. Instruct and lead participants in a variety of outdoor outings, clinics, or classes during weekends and evenings year‑round (Summer, Fall, Spring, Winter). This pooled position will expire when the applicant pool is exhausted.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct and lead participants in outdoor outings, clinics, or classes.
  • Familiarize and adhere to the OP Curriculum, OP Standards of Practice, and related materials.
  • Take responsibility for the safety of participants, equipment, vehicles, and other resources.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with participants to assess skill development and recreational experience.
  • Initiate appropriate rescue response and/or administer first aid during course‑related emergencies.
  • Perform other duties and specific course responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Leadership skills and experience working with adults and/or children.
  • Significant experience and skill with at least one outdoor activity.
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions.
  • Strong teaching skills; clear verbal and written communication.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • CPR / AED and Standard First Aid certifications required prior to working.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising Outdoor Program Adventure Trip programs.
  • Proposal of a minimum of one OP Adventure program per semester.
  • Knowledge of proper trip leader packet completion.
  • Enforcement of all Adventure Program policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Instruction on safety, equipment use, and skill development.
  • Professional, attentive presence.
  • Emergency care procedural experience.
  • Current CPR/First Aid and other outdoor instruction certifications (e.g., Avalanche 1).
  • Attendance at mandatory meetings, orientations, and staff development workshops.
  • Awareness and adherence to Campus Recreation programs and services.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Team‑player behavior with Outdoor Program supervisors and other Campus Recreation employees.
  • Potential eligibility for Federal Work Study (contact Financial Aid at 801‑626‑6585).
