Job summary

American Outdoor Education seeks an OE Program Instructor to lead hikes, teach lessons aligned with state standards, and support student growth through diverse program elements.

You will work with students, chaperones, teachers, and administrators, lead activities from rock wall to team-building exercises, supervise overnight groups, and travel between sites, delivering engaging outdoor education while prioritizing safety and faith-based values.

Qualifications

• Minimum education of a bachelor’s degree or minimum of two years equivalent experience
• Adaptability and Godly Christian character
• Current Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR & First Aid certification which includes an in-person training element
• Full agreement with Statement of Faith, Mission, Vision, and Values, and compliance with staff handbook
• Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Lead hikes and teach the outdoor education curriculum.
• Develop professional relationships with coworkers and guests (students, chaperones, teachers, and administrators).
• Teach the outdoor education curriculum including standing, walking, hiking on uneven terrain and in all weather.
• Lead program elements including rock wall, archery, songs, games, chapels, worship, skits, dances, and team building exercises.
• Enforce dining hall standards during meals and supervise overnight groups.
• Travel to multiple sites for outdoor education programs.
• Attend OE team meetings and provide supportive leadership when necessary
• Assist in cleaning and inventory management and provide first aid as needed

Overview:

The OE Program Instructor’s primary role is to lead hikes, teach lessons based on the state science standards, and help students grow through a variety of program elements.

Essential Functions

• Instruct groups of students in various activities on 3, 4, or 5 day programs
• Develop professional relationships with coworkers and guests (students, chaperones, teachers, and administrators)
• Perform duties and/or participate in activities including:
• Teach the outdoor education curriculum, which includes standing, walking, and hiking, sometimes strenuous, over uneven terrain and in all weather conditions
• Lead various program elements including rock wall, archery, songs, games, chapels, worship, skits, dances, and team building exercises
• Enforce dining hall standards during meals
• Supervise a group of students overnight
• Travel to multiple sites for the outdoor education programs

Additional Functions

• Attend OE team meetings
• Provide supportive leadership when necessary
• Assist in cleaning and inventory management
• Provide first aid and basic health care when necessary
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor
