The University of Nebraska at Omaha is seeking an OTHER HOURLY- Group Fitness Instructor to deliver safe, engaging group fitness classes to a diverse campus community.

This on-site, hourly role requires current certification, CPR/First Aid, and the ability to modify workouts for various fitness levels. You will help promote campus wellness and support student engagement through dynamic classes.

Qualifications

  • Current nationally recognized Group Fitness Instructor certification (e.g., ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM) or Format-specific certification.
  • Current CPR / AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain prior to teaching).
  • Ability to lead safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes for diverse populations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to manage responsibilities independently.
  • Ability to demonstrate exercises and provide appropriate modifications and progressions.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all participants.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes aligned with program formats and participant needs
  • Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and modifications to accommodate varying fitness levels and abilities
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and motivating environment that enhances participant experience
  • Ensure participant safety by monitoring form, offering corrections, and responding appropriately to emergencies
  • Arrive prepared and on time, including set-up and clean-up of equipment and studio space
  • Maintain current knowledge of fitness trends and best practices; apply them appropriately in class instruction
  • Build positive relationships with participants and contribute to a supportive campus wellness community
  • Follow all Campus Recreation and Wellness policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines
  • Assist with program promotion through campus events, outreach, and engagement efforts
  • Be available to substitute classes and/or secure qualified substitutes when needed
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education opportunities
  • Maintain certifications ( CPR / AED, First Aid and format-specific credentials)

Essential Functions

Work Schedule

Group Fitness classes are scheduled at various times, including early morning, midday, and evening offerings. Instructors are assigned classes based on availability, certification/format, and program needs. Weekly hours vary by assignment and semester.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires the ability to lead and demonstrate group fitness classes involving frequent standing, walking, and physical movement. The instructor must be able to see, hear, and communicate effectively in a group setting, safely demonstrate exercises, and occasionally lift or move fitness equipment. Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment is a group fitness setting. Instructors regularly work indoors in fitness studios or recreation spaces with moderate to high activity levels and increased noise during class times. The environment may include music, group interaction, and movement-based instruction.
