Position Overview
Akicita Federal is seeking an experienced and board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon to provide inpatient and outpatient surgical services at the Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), a high-volume facility serving the Navajo Nation and surrounding areas. The contractor will work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and departments, including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Orthopedics, to deliver comprehensive surgical care. This position requires regular weekday hours, scheduled surgical blocks, and rotational on-call coverage, including weekends and holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform general surgical duties, including pre-operative evaluations, surgeries, and post-operative care as directed by the Chief of Surgery or designee.
- Provide both inpatient and outpatient general surgery services at GIMC, including consultations from internal clinics and external IHS service units.
- Admit and co-manage patients requiring inpatient care in collaboration with other departments.
- Maintain a variable work schedule (clinic/OR time typically split 60/40), coordinated and approved at least two weeks in advance.
- Conduct outpatient evaluations, assess patient complaints, develop diagnoses and treatment plans, and educate patients and families regarding care.
- Treat a broad range of general surgical conditions for adult and pediatric populations (approximately 90% adult, 10% pediatric).
- Prescribe and monitor medications in compliance with federal and U.S. Public Health Service standards, ensuring safe, effective, and cost-efficient drug therapy.
- Complete all medical records by the end of each work session and participate in performance reviews, quality assurance programs, and surgical peer review.
- Submit accurate timesheets and log hours daily; minimum 2 hours may be billed for after-hours call-backs.
- Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation during weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. The contractor is expected to round on all inpatients during on-call weekends unless no patients are present.
Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 24 months of experience practicing as a physician.
- At least 12 months must be in General Surgery unless otherwise approved by the Contracting Officer.
- Completion of a General Surgery residency is required.
Licensure and Certification
- Must possess a current, valid, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Territory.
- Must be Board Certified in General Surgery.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
Workload Expectations
Clinic Volume: 10–14 patients per day
Inpatient Volume: 0–3 patients on average
Surgical Cases: 5–15 per month
On-Call: Average 4–6 weekdays/nights and 2–3 weekends per month
Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday; contractors may depart early if daily workload is completed and noted on their timesheet
