Job description

Job Title: Orthopaedic Technician

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Manager and the Manager of Orthopaedic Technicians, this position is responsible for providing orthopaedic services to patients in a busy ambulatory clinic. The role supports the newly opened Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine and Upper Extremity Center in Waltham, MA, focusing on managing durable medical equipment (DME) and casting needs.

  1. Receive prescriptions for orthotic devices from physicians; evaluate patient needs.
  2. Consult with physicians on complex cases or when additional information is needed.
  3. Evaluate orthoses on patients to ensure proper fit, function, aesthetics, and quality.
  4. Recommend alternative construction methods or new materials to physicians.
  5. Design, fabricate, fit, and repair off-the-shelf (OTS) devices including surgical supports.
  6. Utilize knowledge of materials such as plastic, cloth, and leather.
  7. Participate in orthosis evaluation to ensure proper fit and function.
  8. Educate patients on the use and maintenance of orthotic devices and footwear.
  9. Apply and remove casts and supporting dressings, primarily for upper extremity/hand cases.
  10. Assist physicians with fracture reduction, dislocation setting, and suture removal.
  11. Distribute orthopaedic aids like crutches and canes; instruct patients in their use; maintain inventory.
  12. Document patient records regarding prescriptions, education, and outcomes.
  13. Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
  14. Manage inventory using electronic software, maintaining par levels and ordering supplies.
  15. Maintain records for purchase orders, supplies, and inventory management.
  16. Provide backup coverage for other orthopaedic clinics as needed.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • ATC certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of orthotic fabrication techniques and proper tool use.
  • Experience with casting is strongly preferred.

This position is primarily outpatient and based in Waltham, MA.
